I cherish a the Dutch Old Masters. As a contemporary artist, I work with the female nude and portraiture, so I was enthusiastic when the Rembrandt House approached me to create a new series inspired by Rembrandt’s nudes. His incredible drawings and etchings show not only amazing technique and individuality, but also a sublime mastery of light, shadow and composition. His strong light-dark contrasts and his bold compositions, engaging costumes and draperies, resulted in powerful visual images. His models, portrayed from life, with their own personalities and bodies, not adjusted to fashion and ideals, were striking in their day, and have remained so into the present. This stunning British 18th century Old Master portrait oil painting, with exceptional provenance, is by noted artist George Romney. It was painted in 1788, commissioned by James Evelyn of Felbridge as it is of his younger daughter Anne, aged 20 years old. James was a Doctor of Law and Anne's mother was his second wife, Jane. Felbridge house, Anne's home, was in the village of Godstone in Surrey. This superb oil painting is a seated portrait of Anne, wearing a white dress with a green sash, her forearms exposed and her hands in her lap. Anne is blessed with the most wonderful long auburn curly hair and is visually stunning. Her body is partly turned away from the artist/viewer and she is slightly gazing down at us with confident, clear eyes. Anne is pictured in a landscape with a dramatic sky behind her. Romney's brushwork on her dress, hair and the background is superb. The delicate detailing of her facial features is also stunning. Sometimes Old Master portraits can be a little staid, but this one of Anne with her wild auburn hair and bold look is just magnificent. This is a fantastic example of George Romney's work and of an 18th century British Old Master with exceptional detailed provenance.

This photograph is #9 from a collection of 12 different poses in this series taken in Platt Lynes's NYC studio in 1949 (as per the NY Public Library archives). The cloud backdrop is recognizable in other Platt Lynes photographs. Moncion was a personal friend of Platt Lynes and this photograph is from Moncion's personal photographic collection.
George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime. Platt Lynes photographs are in the collections of every major art museum and university archive including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Yale Art Museum, and the Smithsonian.
Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel in Orpheus, Death in La Valse, Prince Ivan in Firebird, and the Boy in Afternoon of a Faun. He was also a choreographer and a talented painter who exhibited alongside Miro, Picasso and Carrado Cagli. About Artist
Anjolaoluwa Arike Fatunmbi is an artist based in the southwest city of Ibadan, Oyo state, Nigeria. Her medium of art is expressed in traditional Adire and Ankara fabric with a blend of acrylic on canvas. Her journey into art began at an early stage while watching her father work on various forms of art as a seasoned professional. For, Arike, Art was second nature as she lived and dreamed of art in an environment beaming with top professionals and ardent art enthusiasts.
As she advanced in age with a broader exposure to the vicissitudes of life and a deeper understanding of how human nature transcends and reinvents in a constantly changing circle, her works are consciously impacted by her cultural roots and personal experiences. Arike’s textile art is composed of intricate compositions of layers of fabric, flowery patterns, and detailed attention to the markings of the female features. Her pieces are reflective of her personality as she loves to incorporate vibrant colors and whimsical designs.
With her early start in the Art scene, Arike has been able to apprentice under renowned masters in the Art sector like the globally acclaimed proponent of Contemporary Black Art, Oluwole Omofemi. Her work was selected for the prestigious Art fellowship themed: Telling textile tales. The program sponsored by the British Council had in attendance notable heavyweights like Uzoma Samuel and Laura Jones among other participants. A black and white photograph by Clarence Sinclair Bull (American, 1896-1979), matte finish, double-weight paper, depicting a 1931 shot of Swedish/American actress Greta Garbo (Swedish, 1905-1990) on the set of the film Susan Lenox (Her Fall And Rise) directed by Robert Z. Leonard. Greta Garbo poses in a hat, her hand resting on her face, while gazing into the camera. Printed decades later from the original negative, penciled in the lower left corner "A.P.," Estate stamped and blind embossed in the lower right corner "Clarence Sinclair Bull," further blind embossed in same corner "The Kobal / Collection," on verso with the photographer's black ink credit stamp and with "Edward Weston" black ink credit stamps dated "1981" and "1992," originally from the John Kobal Collection.
Greta Garbo was a Swedish-American actress. Regarded as one of the greatest screen actresses of all time, she was known for her melancholic, somber persona, her film portrayals of tragic characters, and her subtle and understated performances. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked Garbo fifth on its list of the greatest female stars of classic Hollywood cinema.
Clarence Sinclair Bull was born in Sun River, Montana, in 1896. His career began when Samuel Goldwyn hired him in 1920 to photograph publicity stills of the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film studio's stars. He is most famous for his photographs of Greta Garbo, taken between 1926 and 1941. Bull's first portrait of Garbo was a costume study for the silent romantic drama film Flesh and the Devil in September 1926.
