George Dragon

A traditional Russian icon in tempera painting on wood, depicting St. George in Lydda, slaying a dragon who was said to have risen from a lake every day, robbing and eating humans.

The crossbowman on the right evokes Saint George’s fight against the dragon. This low-relief was made after to woodcuts by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553).

The back of the coin has Saint George fighting the dragon Symbolizing the triumph of good over evil and the victory of the Christian spirit over the forces of evil.
