19th Century Russian Silver and Polychrome Cloisonne Enamel Candle Holders

About the Item

A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Russian silver and polychrome cloisonne enamel candlesticks; an addition to our continental silverware collection. These magnificent antique Russian silver candlesticks have a circular rounded form. The waisted shaped capitals of these exceptional examples of antique 1890s silverware are embellished with fine and impressive cloisonné scrolling foliate designs and geometric motifs using various tones of blue, red and white sections of polychrome enamel, all on a matte background. The plain fixed sconces/drip pan of each Russian candlestick is fitted with a detachable hallmarked candle sleeve. The capitals are supported by shaped columns incorporating a circular knop to the upper portion embellished with oval bead designs incorporating white enamel decoration. The domed portion of the foot of each candlestick is further embellished with scrolling leaf and floral decoration, reflecting the same tones of cloisonné enamel as that to the capital. The enamel decorated cylindrical portion of the base incorporates rosette designs and is supported by four impressive cast silver feet, accented with scrolling leaf decoration. The domed undersides of these antique candlesticks are further embellished with polychrome cloisonné enamel, reflecting that of the bases; this indicates the high quality of the candlesticks. The hallmarks struck to the underside of the sleeve, foot and sconce of each candlestick include: Maker's mark: ?? (untraced). Maker's mark: ?? 1891 (untraced). Silver quality/purity mark: 84 (84 zolotniks). City mark: St George slaying the dragon (Moscow, Russia). * 84 zolotniki is equivalent to 875/1000 or .875 standard silver. Condition These antique Russian silver candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The enamel is in perfect condition. The Russian hallmarks struck to each drip pan and sleeve, in addition to the underside of the feet are very clear.
