He was educated at Ellery School in Liscard, Cheshire and later attended the Rossall Art School near Blackpool, where he won prizes for drawing.

Over the years he designed many dining chairs, tray carts, sideboards, cabinets, trolley carts, and bookcases.

He moved to London around 1885, before settling in Eton Wick, Berkshire at the end of the 1880’s.

“I was interested in him,” the artist has said, “because he was the first cartoon logo that was a made-up cartoon-like personality.”

At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck.
