Zhang He was born in Shenyang, China in 1963. He specialized in oil painting at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts after completing studies in photography and stage design. Zhang He moved to Montreal, Canada in 1998 where he currently lives and works. In his refusal to settle on easy formulae, the artist has induced a process of constant reinvention that has given his art extraordinary power and momentum over the past decade. Zhang He’s bright paintings have developed from depictions of abstracted plants, flowers and figures to full-on visual abstraction. His vigorous abstractions range from austere studies in movement and energy to exuberant explosions of color that express the ever-changing landscape of his emotions. Gestural power and luminous hues reflect the verve and freedom of Chinese calligraphy, while each painting is a journey of self-discovery, continual exploration and personal transformation. The artist’s energy and ruptured use of color place him close to European expressionism. He embraces this association while maintaining a close relationship with the traditions of a Chinese oil painting. The concept of Chi is integral to Zhang He’s work. In traditional Chinese culture, Chi is believed to be part of everything that exists, as in “life force” or “spiritual energy”. Chi serves as a metaphor for the fundamental physical properties of the universe. This spontaneity, along with Zhang He’s lyrical brushstrokes, skillful mixing of color and sculptural impasto, result in a delicious palette. With paint like hot lava, the artwork of Zhang He surges onto the canvas. His bold strokes of color and luminous hues are gorgeous and seductive, evoking energy and passion, sensuality and angst, adding emotion to his contemporary style.

A Chinese screen can refer to a number or things, including standing folding room dividers, architectural window or door screen panels, or even decorative latticework hangings.
A Chinese scroll is a painting or calligraphy painted on silk or rice paper that has been mounted onto a heavier paper or silk with wooden rollers at both ends. They can be rolled up for easy storage, and can be viewed hung on the wall, or unrolled along a long table.
Chinese rosewood, known as hongmu (红木), is a general term used for a variety of tropical fine grained fragrant hardwoods of deep reddish brown color that is prized for furniture making.
Chinese figurative sculptures vary widely depending on the medium and intended use. Ornate Buddhist figures assisted ritual meditation, wooden ancestor figures embodied the lingering spirit of a relative, ceramic mingqi burial figures accompanied one’s spirit in the afterlife, and decorative export sculptures presented an idealized version of Chinese culture and beauty.
The most common Chinese scroll art is in the “shan shui” (山水) style ink painting. Literally translated as “Mountain and Water”, these paintings evoke dreamy landscapes.
Valued for its rarity and lustrous appearance, jade has been thought to symbolize excellence and purity of human virtue. When worn as jewelry or as a protective charm, the stone was thought to imbue a person with a clear mind and pure spirit, and to guard against evil spirits or illness.
