What a cow skull represents is largely a matter of personal interpretation. Some people see it as a symbol of cowboys or the Old West, while others think of it as a reminder that every living thing eventually dies. Shop a variety of cow skull decorative objects and art on 1stDibs.

Alexander McQueen used skulls as a symbol to bring his interest in mortality and the fragility of life to his work. The legendary British fashion designer used skulls (and bones) throughout his designs, including in his scarves, shoes, shirts and other items, starting with his 1992 graduate collection, which focused on Jack the Ripper and his victims.

The skull, of course, is a memento mori, a reminder of death. McQueen frequently juxtaposed the glamour of the catwalk with intimations of our coming doom. McQueen's skull scarf appeared in his Spring 2003 collection. Inspired by the 1986 Roland Joffé film 'The Mission,' the collection featured pirate looks and a shipwreck theme. The scarf soon became widely coveted among celebrities and tastemakers, and it was reproduced by counterfeiters worldwide. The designer's handbags are equally edgy and chic, and his skull-clasp Four-Ring Clutch and other clutches featuring skull motifs have become iconic McQueen accessories.

Find vintage Alexander McQueen bags, dresses, jackets and other items for sale on 1stDibs.

Depending on the design, carts may have two long handles for pulling by hand or a hitch for towing with a bicycle. What flower rings symbolize depends on the floral motif. The rings came into popularity during the Victorian age when people associated different species with certain sentiments. What the flower is on Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry varies. Artisans at the luxury jewelry house have drawn inspiration from several types of flowers over time, including roses, chrysanthemums, peonies and daisies. Floral designs are frequently set with gemstones at their center and feature glittering pavé petals. After the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, the company produced several lavish pieces featuring hieroglyphics and other Egyptian motifs to go along with the geometric Art Deco jewelry of that decade and the next. Following World War II, as symbols of freedom and rebirth, the firm focused on naturalistic forms such as birds, flowers, fruit and flying insects. On 1stDibs, shop an assortment of Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry.

Why there are so many insects in Dutch flower paintings is a matter of debate among art historians. Some feel that Dutch artists painted the insects in great detail simply to show their skill or to depict the flowers in the most natural way possible. Others believe the insects may have deeper symbolism. They could represent the interconnectedness of life or be reminders of death. On 1stDibs, shop a variety of Dutch paintings on 1stDibs.
