Alice Mumford Roberts Culin Art

American, 1875-1950

Alice Mumford Roberts Culin was born in Philadelphia and died in Miami, Florida. She attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts where she studied with Joseph DeCamp, Robert Henri, and Carl Newman. She was a student of William Merritt Chase in Shinnecock, New York. Alice then spent time abroad for two years in Spain and then Paris where she exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1900, followed by London to study one year at Whistler's art school and exhibited there at Earl's Court in 1902. Upon return, she began a career as a portraitist and won the Mary Smith Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1905 and 1910. She also exhibited 3 paintings at the Panama-Pacific Exposition in 1915 and was awarded a bronze medal. She married the famous ethnographer Steward Culin, curator of the Museum of the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences in 1920 and lived in Brooklyn until his death in 1929. She then lived and worked in Miami from 1930 until her death.
