Allen Jones Art

British, b. 1937

British Pop artist Allen Jones is no stranger to controversy. In 1970, his group of erotic life-sized fiberglass sculptures Hatstand, Table and Chair — sexually suggestive hyperrealistic models of women transformed into pieces of furniture — made headlines, provoked outrage and was met with intense scrutiny by art critics. Despite the condemnation — or perhaps partly owing to it — his work has sold for millions of dollars at auction, and while Jones’s figurative paintings, prints and sculptures have courted negative publicity, there is no question that his work is provocative and coveted by some collectors.

Born in Southampton in 1937, Jones attended the Royal College of Art alongside classmates R. B. Kitaj and David Hockney. While the school expelled Jones after one year, his work was included in the “Young Contemporaries” exhibition of 1961 — regarded as the birth of the British Pop art movement. Then, in 1963, Jones won the Prix des Jeunes Artistes at the Paris Biennale.

After moving to New York in 1964, Jones began experimenting with sexual imagery and erotic figures. He endeavored to explore complex relationships between men and women, and placed a specific focus on the female form in his nude sculptures and abstract paintings. While the era gave way to works by Jones that were especially sexually charged, his body of work also came to include colorful lithographic prints that drew on fashion design and cabaret.

Jones’s works have been exhibited extensively throughout the U.K., Europe and elsewhere around the world, including shows in London, Zurich, Lisbon, Hong Kong, Shanghai and St. Louis. In 2015, the Royal College of Art staged a large retrospective of his work. Jones’s pieces are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Large Bus by Allen Jones classic British 1960s pop art in bright primary colors

By Allen Jones

Located in New York, NY

This large Allen Jones lithograph is printed exuberantly in primary colors. A swath of bright red brushstrokes represents the side of a bus. In the upper left, small windows reveal the passengers: a woman’s face is cut off above her vampy red lips, and a blue-haired man’s face is hidden. Royal blue fills the upper right corner of the composition, giving the impression of looking up at a passing bus against the cloudless sky. One can imagine Jones was thinking of the iconic red double decker bus the AEC Routemaster, first introduced in London in 1954. In the 1960s buses were a living symbol of familiar and new technology coexisting: as David Bucken put it, “In and around London a midpoint change on a journey might involve alighting from an RT bus, of which production had started just prior to World War II, and getting on one of the sexy new Routemasters.” In the artist’s words: “The whole problem as a figurative artist was that it was going against the main march of modernism, which was towards abstraction. But here was a way of making the subject you were painting the same as the object you were painting on. By making the canvas a rhomboid, and putting little wheels on it, you have a schematic version of a vehicle, in this case a London bus.” Jones plays with the space between abstraction and figuration: windowed passengers, elaborated with just a few lines and placed adjacent to a weighty red ground of brushstrokes, easily convey the form of a bus, yet the print also conveys Jones’ visceral, painterly delight in color play. Four color lithograph on wove paper Paper 28.5 x 42.5 / 72.4 X 108 cm Wood frame 31 x 46 x 2 in. / 78.75 x 117 x 5 cm with 1 in. moulding Signed by the artist lower right in pencil, labeled Trial Proof lower left in pencil. Bufo Contemporary Bronze Sculpture Nude Boy Marble Stone Male Figure Wim van der Kant (1949, Kampen) is a selftaught artist. Next to his busy profession as a teacher at a high school, he intensively practises his profession as a sculptor. Only when his work would measure up to his own standards, he decided to present it to the rest of the world. In 1995, he exhibited for the first time with Morren Galleries. Van der Kant desires to sculpt young people who still stand uninhibited and curiously in life. The reason he chooses to sculpt boys is, because he is one himself, this way the subject is closer to him. The anatomy of his figures testify of perfectionism. Van der Kant's subjects show similarities with the sculptures from the Greek and Roman antiquity...

ALLEN JONES Mail Order, for Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art, from The Collection of Art Critic Anthony Haden-Guest, 1971 Lithograph mounted on franked envelope of wove paper (Hand Signed) 6 × 9 inches Edition of 250 (unnumbered) Hand signed in blue ink by Allen Jones with his initials on the lower left of the lithographic stamp, affixed to the envelope. Unframed As a consequence of the prolonged strike by the Royal Mail postal workers in the United Kingdom, Allen Jones, along with a group of top British Pop artists of the era including David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Derek Boshier, the poet/activist Christopher Logue and Richard Hamilton, published ''Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art''to raise funds for the striking workers. The "stamps" were published in a limited edition of only 250 each (some artists, like Paolozzi and Allen Jones created more than one design), with the artists signing each by hand in blue ink with his initials on the lower right. Allen Jones "Mail Order" is an especially clever take on the project; it is at once a postage stamp (hence the title "Mail Order"), but it also refers to the popular mail order catalogues of the era. It was a particular preoccupation of Jones, who, separately, created a large lithograph called "Janet is Wearing" -- referring to his wife Janet, but playing upon the advertising jargon of the day, used in mail order catalogues. For this particular project - creating a stamp to raise money for mail carriers...

'Maîtresse' Original Vintage Film Poster by Allen Jones, American, 1976

By Allen Jones

Located in Devon, GB

In an early commercial commission, renowned British Pop Artist Allen Jones was asked to design the publicity poster for the 1976 US release of Barbet Schroeder’s 1973 fetish romance 'Maîtresse,' starring a young Gerard Depardieu as the small time crook who stumbles into the double-life of a dominatrix, played by Bulle Ogier. Werner Gallery, who exhibited Jones' original artwork in 2016, stated that 'despite his inability to Identify with its explicit sadomasochistic themes, Jones accepted the poster commission based on his fondness for the powerfully stylized heroine of the film.' Jones' original design, with the high-heeled, leather-clad brunette with bull whip in hand, proved too risqué for the distributor, so the figure was reworked into a blonde beauty gripping a pair of keys instead of the more provocative whip. In 2008, Jones revisited his original design and began developing it into a series of dominatrix paintings...
