About the Item
This large Allen Jones lithograph is printed exuberantly in primary colors. A swath of bright red brushstrokes represents the side of a bus. In the upper left, small windows reveal the passengers: a woman’s face is cut off above her vampy red lips, and a blue-haired man’s face is hidden. Royal blue fills the upper right corner of the composition, giving the impression of looking up at a passing bus against the cloudless sky. One can imagine Jones was thinking of the iconic red double decker bus the AEC Routemaster, first introduced in London in 1954. In the 1960s buses were a living symbol of familiar and new technology coexisting: as David Bucken put it, “In and around London a midpoint change on a journey might involve alighting from an RT bus, of which production had started just prior to World War II, and getting on one of the sexy new Routemasters.”
In the artist’s words: “The whole problem as a figurative artist was that it was going against the main march of modernism, which was towards abstraction. But here was a way of making the subject you were painting the same as the object you were painting on. By making the canvas a rhomboid, and putting little wheels on it, you have a schematic version of a vehicle, in this case a
London bus.” Jones plays with the space between abstraction and figuration: windowed passengers, elaborated with just a few lines and placed adjacent to a weighty red ground of brushstrokes, easily convey the form of a bus, yet the print also conveys Jones’ visceral, painterly delight in color play.

Born in Southampton, England in 1937, Allen Jones counted amongst his classmates at the Royal College of Art artist like Hockney, Boshier and Phillips. Jones became known for his bus paintings on shaped canvases and then gained notoriety for his provocative images of stiletto-clad women.

Allen Jones
British Pop artist Allen Jones is no stranger to controversy. In 1970, his group of erotic life-sized fiberglass sculptures Hatstand, Table and Chair — sexually suggestive hyperrealistic models of women transformed into pieces of furniture — made headlines, provoked outrage and was met with intense scrutiny by art critics. Despite the condemnation — or perhaps partly owing to it — his work has sold for millions of dollars at auction, and while Jones’s figurative paintings, prints and sculptures have courted negative publicity, there is no question that his work is provocative and coveted by some collectors.
Born in Southampton in 1937, Jones attended the Royal College of Art alongside classmates R. B. Kitaj and David Hockney. While the school expelled Jones after one year, his work was included in the “Young Contemporaries” exhibition of 1961 — regarded as the birth of the British Pop art movement. Then, in 1963, Jones won the Prix des Jeunes Artistes at the Paris Biennale.
After moving to New York in 1964, Jones began experimenting with sexual imagery and erotic figures. He endeavored to explore complex relationships between men and women, and placed a specific focus on the female form in his nude sculptures and abstract paintings. While the era gave way to works by Jones that were especially sexually charged, his body of work also came to include colorful lithographic prints that drew on fashion design and cabaret.
Jones’s works have been exhibited extensively throughout the U.K., Europe and elsewhere around the world, including shows in London, Zurich, Lisbon, Hong Kong, Shanghai and St. Louis. In 2015, the Royal College of Art staged a large retrospective of his work. Jones’s pieces are held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the National Portrait Gallery and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Her highly influential career spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, outdoor sculptural installations, literary works, films, fashion, design, and interventions within existing architectural structures, which allude at once to microscopic and macroscopic universes. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, Kusama’s work has been featured widely in both solo and group presentations. She presented her first solo show in her native Japan in 1952. In the mid-1960s, she established herself in New York as an important avant-garde artist by staging groundbreaking and influential happenings, events, and exhibitions. Her work gained renewed widespread recognition in the late 1980s following a number of international solo exhibitions, including shows at the Center for International Contemporary Arts, New York, and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, both of which took place in 1989. She represented Japan in 1993 at the 45th Venice Biennale, to much critical acclaim. In 1998, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, co-organized Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama, 1958–1968, which toured to the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis (1998-1999), and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo (1999). More recently, in 2011 to 2012, her work was the subject of a large-scale retrospective that traveled to the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Tate Modern, London; and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. From 2012 through 2015, three major museum solo presentations of the artist’s work simultaneously traveled to major museums throughout Japan, Asia, and Central and South America. In 2015, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark, organized a comprehensive overview of Kusama’s practice that traveled to Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter, Høvikodden, Norway; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; and Helsinki Art Museum. In 2017-2019, a major survey of the artist’s work, Infinity Mirrors, was presented at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Seattle Art Museum; The Broad, Los Angeles; Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; The Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia.
