Howard Hodgkin
Welcome (Commissioned by Andy Warhol for Winter Olympics 1984, Sarajevo) Hodgkin

1983

About the Item

In 1983, Hodgkin was asked by Andy Warhol to contribute to the official art portfolio of the Olympic Winter games to be held in Sarajevo in 1984. He produced this striking print, with red and scarlet in the background, and a jungle green chevron in the center – perhaps an arrow pointing upward, or an abstracted tree. This arrow shape would become a repeated theme in Hodgkin’s prints. The direct boldness of Welcome presaged a shift in his work in the mid-eighties: erasure of a border and the emergence of poster-like images. Lithograph from three plates on unsized Rives BFK paper. Published in an edition of 150 + 45 artist's proofs. Signed by the artist with initials and dated 83 lower center in pencil; numbered AP 1/45 lower left in pencil. Published for the XIV Olympic Winter Games in Sarajevo, Former Yugoslavia in 1984.
