August Mosca Art

American, 1909-2002

August Mosca was born in Naples, Italy, on August 19, 1909. He and his family emigrated to the United States in 1911. He attended Yale School of Art in 1924–26, before moving to New York City, where he attended Pratt Institute (1929). While living in his studio on Sixth Avenue and West Fourth Street in 1931, he studied at the Art Students League with Harry Wickey. In 1932, Mosca studied at Grand Central School of Art and made his first trip to study in Italy. He met Joseph Stella in 1937, who introduced him to the silverpoint medium which he perfected throughout his life. The year 1939 saw the completion of Mosca's first paintings of New York City bridges and subways. He received the California Palace of the Legion of Honor Medal and took part in the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition "Portrait of America" during the mid-1940s. His first solo exhibit was at the Salpeter Gallery in New York City, where he showed annually from 1959–69 and 1961 marked a one-man show at the Guild Hall of East Hampton, New York. The Butler Institute of American Art, the Library of Congress, and the Brooklyn Museum (two silverpoint drawings) acquired his work during that time. During the 1970s, Mosca had solo exhibits in New York’s Cultural Center, the Fordham University and the FAR Gallery. Mosca's work was acquired by the Grey Art Gallery of New York University Art Collection, the Parrish Art Museum (Southampton, New York) and the New York Public Library. He received the President's Award in the Audubon Annual, the Barney Paiser Award and the Purchase Prize in the Society of American Graphics Artists Annual. In 1978, the Association of American Artists commissioned two lithographs. In 1987, East End Arts Council held a one-man exhibition of silverpoint drawings and produced a cable television show in conjunction with the exhibit. Mosca participated in "Impressionism and Post-Impressionism" and "New York: Empire City in the Age of Urbanism 1875–1945" exhibits, in 1988, at Grand Central Art Galleries, followed by “August Mosca, A Fifty-Year Retrospective Exhibit” in 1990. Mosca found his inspiration in the Florentine and Northern Italian schools of the Renaissance which he studied on many trips to Italy. He learned that drawing is the most important part of a painting, bringing this knowledge back to the emerging modernism being explored in New York City. Joseph Stella made a lasting impression on the young Mosca. Stella encouraged him to paint the city in a form that would reflect himself. Drawing the bridges of New York, Mosca said, "After many attempts to capture the fright this bridge inspired in me, I eventually arrived at this mood of translucent tranquility and awesome quietude as I looked long at the crisscrosses, struts, and stresses."

Modernist Figurative Pop Art Etching and Aquatint "the Artist" Michael Mazur
By Michael Mazur
Located in Surfside, FL
Michael Mazur "The Artist" Hand signed and editioned from the edition of 50 1967 Michael Burton Mazur (1935-August 18, 2009) was an American artist who was described by William Grimes of The New York Times as "a restlessly inventive printmaker, painter, and sculptor." Born and raised in New York City, Mazur attended the Horace Mann School. He received a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1958, then studied art at Yale. Mazur first gained notice for his series of lithographs and etchings of inmates in a mental asylum, which resulted in two publications, "Closed Ward" and "Locked Ward." Over the years, he worked in printmaking and painting. His series of large-scale prints for Dante's Inferno won critical acclaim, and were the subject of a traveling exhibition organized by the University of Iowa in 1994. Later he concentrated on creating large, lyrical paintings which make use of his free, gestural brushwork and a varied palette. Some of these paintings were seen in an exhibition of 2002 at Boston University, "Looking East: Brice Marden, Michael Mazur, and Pat Steir." (See also Susan Danly, "Branching: The Art of Michael Mazur," 1997). The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has acquired a definMichael Mazur received a B.A. from Amherst College in 1957, studying in his senior year at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy. He went on to earn both a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. from the Yale School of Art and Architecture in 1961. Mazur's first teaching job was at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1961 to 1964. He was awarded a Guggenheim Foundation fellowship for 1964–65. From 1965 to 1976, he taught at Brandeis University, and from 1976 to 1978 at Harvard University. As an artist, teacher, and writer, Mazur has been active in reviving the monotype process. He contributed an essay to the pioneering exhibition catalogue The Painterly Print, published by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1980. Mazur recently chaired the New Provincetown Print...

Original Abstract Texture Green Resin Painting Wall Sculpture - The Earth XLIV-1
By Victoria Kovalenchikova
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Victoria Kovalenchikova’s artworks are an outlook at the transformation of the world surrounding us; a shout in the cold infinity of cosmos. It is an attempt to understand the impact of people on the planet through the language of art. The contemporary trend in her paintings is characterized by a figurative integration of abstract elements. Creatively mixing media from cement, resin, acrylic and epoxy on stretched canvas, Victoria’s work is simultaneously sculptural and painting. The surface of this 32 inch tall by 40 inch wide artwork is covered with a shiny layer of clear, glass-like resin, which enhances the colors and adds depth. The sculptural, green and orange elements protrude beyond the smoother, parts of the artwork. The sides are finished as a continuation of the front, creating more layers and detailing. It is signed, titled and dated on back by the artist. It does not require framing and is wired and ready to hang. Free delivery within Los Angeles. Affordable US and global shipping options are available. A certificate of authenticity issued by Artspace Warehouse is included. Her series on the World is immediately familiar, provoking us to step closer and have a better look, then after a few moments the nuances of her art appear. Her training is evident in her skill in creating the textures. Her charisma can be felt by her depiction of the ocean and their various shades of colors. Victoria’s work is magnetic and is being consistently collected by art lovers. Victoria Kovalenchikova was born in Belarus in 1978. She lives and works in Amsterdam (Netherlands) since 2008.
