Charles Partridge Adams Paintings

American, 1858-1942
Born in Franklin, Massachusetts, Charles Partridge Adams moved with his mother and two sisters to Denver, Colorado, in 1876 in an effort to cure the two girls who suffered from tuberculosis. In Denver, Adams found work at the Chain and Hardy Bookstore. He received his first, and only, art training from the owner's wife, Helen Chain. Mrs. Chain, a former pupil of George Inness, provided instruction and encouragement to the young artist and introduced him to other artists in the area including Alexander Phimister Proctor. Proctor and Adams developed a friendship and the pair embarked on a three-month camping trip in Egeria Park, Colorado. In addition to exploring, both artists did quite a bit of sketching on the trip. After their return to Denver, Adams and Proctor shared a studio for a short period of time before Proctor moved to New York. Adams remained in Denver and after a short stint as an art teacher he studied wood engraving with Major J.M. Bagley. He quickly abandoned the engraving for health reasons and began working in crayon. His business card read "Landscapes and Crayon Portraits" though he much preferred landscapes. The artist soon made a name for himself in Denver. He established a wealthy clientele that purchased a number of his paintings to decorate their homes and to give as Christmas gifts. In 1890, Adams married Alida Joslin Reynolds and the couple honeymooned in Estes Park, Colorado. That same year, he exhibited for the first time at the National Academy of Design. Three years later, the artist opened his first studio on Larimer Street in Denver. He began working in watercolor and had success in the new medium selling his paintings in stores in Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Kansas City, and Chicago. Also in 1893, Adams became a charter member of the Denver Artists Club. In 1905, the couples dream of living in Estes Park was realized when Adams completed construction on a home and studio there. Adams referred to the studio as "The Sketch Box" and the family spent summers there every year. Though Adams is best known for his Colorado landscapes, he also painted in Yellowstone, the Tetons, the Canadian Rockies, the New Mexican Desert, and California. In 1914, the couple sailed to Europe where they spent five months touring. Three years later, Charles suffered from a near-fatal illness. In 1920, Adams moved to California where he opened a studio first in Pasadena and later in Laguna Beach. He became a member of the Laguna Beach Artists Association and began painting marine subjects. ©David Cook Galleries, LLC

Sierra Nevada Spain Mountain Landscape Modernist Watercolour on Handmade Paper

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

**Title:** Sierra Nevada Spain Mountain Landscape Modernist Watercolour on Handmade Paper **Artist:** European School, 20th century **Medium:** Watercolour on handmade paper, unframed **Size:** 7.75 x 11.25 inches **Signature:** Unsigned **Stamped verso:** No stamp visible from the images provided **Provenance:** Private collection **Condition:** Fair to good vintage condition. The handmade paper shows age toning, surface marks, pinholes, creasing, handling wear and irregular deckled edges. There are visible losses, nicks and roughness to the lower edge, with further wear and small losses to the corners and outer margins. The painted image remains atmospheric, decorative and visually appealing. **Description:** A striking 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and inscribed verso **Sierra Nevada Spain**. The composition depicts a dramatic mountain range with snow-covered peaks, layered slopes and a dark band of distant cloud or sea beyond. The scene has a bold, simplified quality, combining the atmosphere of a travel study with the structure of a modernist landscape. The painting is particularly appealing for its graphic treatment of mountain forms. The artist reduces the Sierra Nevada view into broad planes of muted blue, grey, brown, ochre and cream, allowing the snowy ridges and angular slopes to stand out clearly against the darker background. The result is atmospheric yet design-led, with the mountain landscape arranged almost as a series of abstract colour fields. The handmade paper adds considerable character to the work. Its warm natural tone, visible fibres, pinholes and irregular deckled edges give the piece a tactile, artisanal quality, enhancing the sense of the painting as an original travel study or plein air-inspired work. The painted area sits within the sheet, leaving the surrounding handmade paper visible and giving the work a distinctive object-like presence. The verso inscription identifies the subject as **Sierra Nevada Spain**, giving the piece useful topographical and search appeal. The Sierra Nevada mountain range in southern Spain has long attracted artists and travellers for its dramatic peaks, changing light and contrast between high mountain scenery and warmer Mediterranean tones. This watercolour captures that sense of rugged landscape through a restrained but expressive palette. This original work would appeal to collectors of Spanish landscapes, Sierra Nevada paintings...

**Title:** Green Fields Country Landscape Modernist Watercolour on Handmade Paper **Artist:** European School, 20th century **Medium:** Watercolour on handmade paper, unframed **Size:** x inches **Signature:** Unsigned **Stamped verso:** No stamp visible from the images provided **Provenance:** Private collection **Condition:** Fair to good vintage condition. The handmade paper shows age toning, surface marks, pinholes, handling wear, creasing and irregular deckled edges. There is old tape or adhesive residue visible along the upper edge, with small nicks, roughness and wear to the outer margins. The painted image remains fresh, atmospheric and decorative. **Description:** A subtle 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and depicting an open countryside view with green fields, distant buildings and a low wooded hillside. The composition is arranged in soft horizontal layers, with pale green fields stretching across the foreground and a darker tree-covered slope rising to the left. The painting is particularly appealing for its quiet modernist treatment of landscape. Rather than describing the scene in exact detail, the artist reduces the countryside into broad washes of green, ochre, blue-grey and brown. The distant buildings and horizon line are lightly suggested, giving the work the feel of a travel study or plein air sketch, focused more on atmosphere and colour than strict topographical precision. The handmade paper adds considerable character to the piece. Its warm natural tone, visible fibres, pinholes and irregular edges give the work a tactile, artisanal quality. The painted image sits within the sheet, leaving the surrounding paper visible and giving the work an attractive object-like presence. The reverse bears an indistinct handwritten inscription, possibly a location or title, though it is not clear enough to confidently identify. The work is therefore catalogued broadly as European School. Its gentle palette and open rural subject would appeal to collectors of country landscapes, modernist watercolours, handmade paper artworks, European travel studies, green field paintings...

The handmade paper shows age toning, surface marks, pinholes, handling wear, creasing and irregular deckled edges. There are visible nicks, tears, small losses and roughness to the outer edges and corners, consistent with age and the nature of the handmade sheet. The painted image remains atmospheric, decorative and visually appealing. **Description:** A striking 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and inscribed verso **Sierra Nevada Granada Spain**. The composition depicts a dramatic mountain view, with snow-covered peaks rising above layered rocky slopes and a blue lake or valley below. The scene has a bold, simplified quality, combining the atmosphere of a travel study with the decorative structure of a modernist landscape. The painting is particularly appealing for its graphic treatment of the mountain forms. The artist reduces the Sierra Nevada landscape into broad planes of muted blue, grey, brown, ochre, green and white, allowing the snow-capped ridges to stand out strongly against the darker surrounding slopes. The result is atmospheric yet design-led, with the landscape arranged almost as a series of abstract colour fields. The verso inscription identifies the subject as the Sierra Nevada near Granada in Spain, giving the piece strong topographical and search appeal. The Sierra Nevada mountain range is one of southern Spain’s most distinctive landscapes, known for its dramatic peaks, changing light and contrast between high mountain scenery and warmer Andalusian tones. This watercolour captures that sense of rugged terrain through a restrained but expressive palette. The handmade paper adds considerable character to the work. Its warm natural tone, visible fibres, pinholes and irregular deckled edges give the piece a tactile, artisanal quality, enhancing its sense as an original travel study or plein air-inspired work.
