Chiyu Uemae Art

Japanese, 1920-2018
Chiyu Uemae (1920 – 2018) was a Japanese abstract artist born in Kyoto. He is particularly noted for his involvement as a founding member of the influential Gutai Art Association, a radical avant-garde art collective formed in 1954 under the leadership of Jiro Yoshihara. Uemae participated in every Gutai exhibition until the group's dissolution in 1972. Uemae's artistic journey was unique; he was a self-taught artist who held various jobs, including an apprentice at a traditional dyeing factory in Kyoto, which profoundly influenced his artistic approach. His early experiences, particularly in dyeing, led to a mature style characterized by meticulous compositions often featuring fine dots, patterns, and textile elements. Unlike some of his Gutai peers known for performance-based works, Uemae focused on the materiality of art, often creating compellingly rough surface textures by combining unconventional materials like sawdust, wood chips, and debris with paint. His two-dimensional works are recognized for their pattern accumulation, achieved through painting knives or delicate stitching, and he also produced sculptures from wood or sawdust. In later years, he continued to create etchings and silkscreens. Uemae's work often combined traditional Japanese colors and sensibilities with an original abstract style. He remained active and continued producing art well into his 80s and 90s.

Printed by Brand X Editions, New York. Artwork size 40 x 30 inches. Custom framed as pictured. Frame size approx 46 x 36 inches. Artwork is in excellent condition. All reasonable offers will be considered. About the Artist: Christopher Wool is a contemporary American painter. In his paintings, Wool contrasts bold stenciled text or abstract brushwork with white backgrounds. In the stenciled works, words run together and breaks arrive at the edges of the canvas, as seen in his Apocalypse Now (1988), which bears the phrase “SELL THE HOUSE SELL THE CAR SELL THE KIDS.” “With the painting the inspiration comes from the process of the work itself,” Wool reflected. “Like music [making the work] is an emotional experience. It’s a visual language and it’s almost impossible to put words to it.” Born on September 16, 1955 in Boston, MA, Wool studied briefly at Sarah Lawrence College, but quickly left to enroll at the New York Studio School. A contemporary of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Julian Schnabel, Cindy Sherman, and others in New York’s downtown art scene in the 1980s, Wool introduced graffiti techniques to his work, later incorporating silkscreens and paint rollers. The artist’s work has been exhibited at numerous institutions around the world, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst am Museum Ludwig in Cologne, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Wool currently lives and works between Marfa, TX and New York, NY with his wife the painter Charline von Heyl.

This work is NOT to be confused with a separate poster edition, which is on different quality paper and bears a printed signature. This is the much-coveted HAND SIGNED and numbered edition. Josef Albers Large: Munich 1972 Olympic Games (Danilowitz 213), 1970 Color silkscreen on 250-gram Schöllers Hammer paper. Signed, dated and numbered 63/200 in graphite pencil on the front 40 inches (vertical) × 25 1/2 inches (horizontal) Catalogue Raisonne Reference: Danilowitz, 213 Unframed Pencil signed and numbered 63/200 - silkscreen from the Deluxe, hand signed edition on Schollers hammer paper (aside from the unsigned regular edition of 4000 on wove paper) Printed by Sirocco Screenprints, New Haven. Published by Ives-Sillman, Inc., New Haven, for Edition Olympia 72 By Josef Albers - famous color theorist and longtime influential head of the Yale University Art Department. It features Albers signature ‘cinetic window’, and is an impressive piece of art and sports history. This is one of only 200 hand signed, dated and numbered prints - (NOT to be confused with the open poster edition of the same image on different paper, which, unlike the present work, only bears the artist's printed signature.) The present work was created in 1970 for the 1972 Munich Olympics. In anticipation of hosting the 1972 summer Olympics, Germany sought to create a positive image for itself. As Arnold Schwarzenegger would write in his memoir "Holding the Olympic Games in Munich was meant to symbolize West Germany's transformation and reemergence in to the community of nations as a modern democratic power". The Munich Olympics were billed as "the happy games" - a term that would become tragically ironic. In spite of, or rather because of, the ruthless killing of Israeli athletes by terrorists during the Munich Olympics, prints like this Albers silkscreen have become a powerful symbol of the enduring power of art to bring cultures together and promote peace. This Josef Albers Olympic...
