Christofle Furniture

French

Although he started his career as a jeweler in 1830 — after apprenticing with his copper jeweler brother-in-law years earlier — Charles Christofle (1805–63) recognized that Second Empire France had an untapped audience for luxury silverware and tableware.

Gold and silver gilt had been the high-end standard in the 18th century, yet society after the Industrial Revolution demanded a more affordable, but still refined, approach. So in the 1840s, Christofle cornered the market on electrolytic gilding and silver plating, dominating the hold on patents in the country for over a decade. His work soon attracted the attention of Louis-Philippe I and then Napoleon III, under whom he was named Fournisseur de l’Empereur, cementing the prestige of his brand.

While Christofle created decadent centerpieces and tableware for the French palaces — as well as prominent clients like the Orient Express — the company’s electroplating of silverware that was far less expensive than that made by silversmiths attained widespread popularity. At a time when many who could not afford gold or silver still used wooden utensils, Christofle was a game changer for at-home dining. An appearance at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago furthered the company’s reach to American consumers who would soon rival the manufacturer’s European clientele.

The 20th century saw Christofle adapting to changing tastes in its offerings, such as the Aria collection, which debuted in 1985 with column-like lines on its flatware designed by Bernard Yot, and the playful egg-shaped silverware container introduced in 2015 that opens to reveal a full flatware set. The company also now sells barware, home accessories and even jewelry, harkening back to its roots. Now almost two centuries old, Christofle maintains its reputation as a leading flatware and silverware company under the ownership of the Chalhoub group, its utensils gracing tables in homes, hotels and restaurants all over the world.

LUC LANEL Paris For Christofle 1930 Art Deco Silver Plated Geometric Hand-Mirror
By Luc Lanel, Christofle
Located in Miami, FL
A geometric hand mirror designed by Lucien "Luc" Lanel for Christofle. This is a beautiful hand-mirror designed in Paris France during the art deco period by Lucien "Luc" Lanel for the house of Christofle, back in the 1930. The useful hand-mirror has been crafted with sharp geometric shapes in solid silverplate with polished finish. It is a very nice piece of decorative art and is fitted with an octagonal beveled mirror. Lucien "Luc" Lanel Luc Lanel (1893-1965) was a very talented sculpture and creator. Very talented designer and ceramist had received his training at the École des arts décoratifs in Paris. He worked mainly with silver or silver-plated metals as well as bronze for the companies Süe et Mare and - as head of the galvanoplastic department - for Christofle, Paris from 1920 to 1946. As a skilled illustrator, he was also responsible for the company's advertisements. Together with the furniture designer Jules Leleu, he received various commissions for interiors and cruise ships. As early as 1928, he created various ceramics in collaboration with his wife Marjolaine Giradet. After the end of the Second World War, the couple concentrated almost exclusively on ceramic work. In addition to regular participation in the Paris Salons and other exhibitions at home and abroad, he also appeared at the Exposition Internationale des Art Décoratifs et Industriels in 1925, as well as at the 1937 Paris World's Fair. His most important creation was the “Odulations” collection and other iconic designs created for the First-Class dining room and the Grand Bar of the great ocean liner the S.S. Normandie which was considered the epitome of Art Deco Design in every way. Country: Paris, France. Period: Art-Deco, 1930. Weight: 391.8 Grams, (0.40 Kg). Measurements: 250 mm by 103 mm by 16 mm (9.85 x 4.05 x 0.63 Inches). Hallmarks: Stamped with French marks; the maker's and manufacturer marks and signed as follows, "CHRISTOFLE". Christofle Xiao Wang Silvered Bronze And Sterling Silver Abstract Lips Sculpture
By Christofle
Located in North Miami, FL
This stellar powerful and conversational silvered bronze and sterling silver limited edition abstracted love lips or heart sculpture was commissioned by Christofle and designed and executed by a young Chinese woman artist named Xiao Hui Wang. This is the first time in Christofle history that a young Chinese artist, albeit a woman was asked to create this commission. It is signed and numbered on the bottom. It is signed with the artists name not terribly legible, then Christofle then 08/66 then France. The base is very heavy and is sterling silver. The top is silvered bronze and was lacquered. The base cannot be lacquered because it is sterling silver. We have not seen another one on line or anywhere else. The original monumental sculpture was first created on the occasion of the Shanghai Expo and stands elegantly in monumental form at the flagship Hilton in Singapore. This is a great symbol of how the masters of silver which are Christofle have transcended the art of the table to the art of the living in sensuality. This is stellar sensual and sexy sculpture that will elicit conversation. It creates reflections of magnitude from the surface and each angle is a different representation. It is extremely heavy and came in its own crate from Paris. It is a piece de resistance of a great sculpture no doubt. This must be trucked. This will need a great pedestal in your home or can sit on a large monumental cocktail...

Christofle Animal Teapot
By Christofle, Emile Reiber
Located in New Orleans, LA
Beautifully crafted and endlessly charming, this exceptionally rare silverplate teapot by the prestigious firm of Christofle & Cie. takes the form of a stylized wild hare. It was designed by Emile Reiber, a highly regarded architect, designer and Prix de Rome winner who joined Christofle as head of the workshop of composition and drawing in 1865. The design is after a Meiji-period Japanese bronze from the famed collection of Henri Cernuschi, an Italian banker and savvy collector of the arts of the Far East. Japonism was rising quickly in popularity in France around the time this teapot was created. Japan had opened borders and started trade with Europe in the 1860s, inspiring new ideas among European designers and artists like Reiber as they saw the arts of Japan firsthand for the first time. Cernuschi exhibited his collection at the Palais de l'Industrie at the Orientalist Exhibition in 1873-74, where Reiber spent weeks sketching the bronze artifacts — drawings he then translated into luxurious silverplate objects for Christofle. Based in Paris, Christofle & Cie. has been manufacturing high-quality luxury items since 1830. Christofle silver has graced the tables of European and Asian nobility for decades, and it is the tableware of choice on such luxury transportation as the Orient Express and the Trans-Siberian Railway. Innovative and revolutionary, the Christofle name is synonymous with elegance and style. An identical Christofle teapot...

Christofle is known for designing luxury silverware and tableware. At a time when many who could not afford gold or silver still used wooden utensils, Christofle was a game changer for at-home dining. The company also now sells barware, home accessories and even jewelry, harkening back to the roots of founder Charles Christofle, who got his start as a copper jeweler apprentice. On 1stDibs, shop a wide variety of Christofle pieces.
