Craig Alan was born in 1971 in San Bernardino, California. Upon moving to New Orleans as a child, Alan worked as a street portrait artist, using the opportunity to practice his figure drawing, as well as earn money for school and supplies.
The creative vision came naturally to Alan and he continued to develop technically and conceptually through his own diligent studies. It was not until his sophomore year at the University of Mobile, Alabama, that Alan formally began to train in arts. His affinity for the subject was immediately apparent. He continued to concentrate in studio arts, earning an area award for academic excellence. The university’s most prestigious exhibition, “Art with a Southern Drawl,” featured 42 of Alan’s pieces, chosen from a field of more than 1,600 submissions.
A minor concentration in theater provided Alan with additional techniques in makeup and set design. This added expertise supported his exploration of mixed media constructions. His skills combine to form elaborate textures, hues and compositions in his pieces. Alan’s artwork reveals a technical sophistication as well as an elaborate imagination.
Constantly craving new ways to link contemporary expressions to traditional art, Alan hopes to travel to Europe in search of artistic artifacts as well as fresh and innovative ideas. He also intends to explore his own family roots and cultural nuances in England and Scotland. Eventually, Alan plans to earn his master’s degree in studio arts in order to teach at the college level. His biggest dream is to own and manage his own atelier. He continues to exhibit his artwork across the United States.

The popular and innovative American Neo-Pop artist Craig Alan was born in San Bernardino, California, in 1971. Although Alan was inclined to creativity and the visual arts from an early age, it was not until his family moved to New Orleans, where he truly developed a sense of artistic purpose in earnest. Alan’s first concentrated attempts at visual expression were through street portraiture, which provided him with the experience and means to purchase art supplies and further his informal artistic studies. Craig Alan attended the University of Mobile in Alabama, where he pursed a degree in the visual arts. During his time at the university, Alan garnered academic recognition and earned awards for excellence in studio art practice. He participated in Art with a Southern Drawl, one of the university’s most popular art exhibitions, which featured forty-two of Alan’s artworks. The artist’s specialty has been and is predominantly figurative works, with Alan seeking new and innovative modes or re-working historical modes of figural representation. He has experimented with and incorporated elements of make-up/cosmetic artistry, set design, sculpture, and traditional figure drawing in his oeuvre. And his shadowbox series, which combines seemingly contrasting and contradictory elements—dresses made of ribbons and feather; shells made of pierced-paper and sticks—and transcends the traditional two-dimensional art form. Craig Alan has received his greatest popular acclaim from collectors for his POPULUS series. Through an intricate process of deconstruction and construction, Alan re-creates iconic images of popular figures through the working and reworking of hundreds of miniature, individuated figures viewed from an aerial or birds-eye-view. His images of celebrities, heroes, or recognizable sites, such as the U.S. Capitol or Statue of Liberty, invite close, slow viewing and scrutiny, that ultimately reveals greater thematic associations and allusions through finely rendered hand details. This painting is Bruno Surdo’s contemporary reimagining of Saint Sebastian, one of the most enduring subjects in Western art. From Mantegna and Botticelli to Guido Reni and Caravaggio, Sebastian has long been depicted as the bound, arrow-pierced martyr whose physical suffering becomes an image of spiritual transcendence. Surdo clearly situates himself within this lineage: the contrapposto pose, uplifted gaze, and carefully modeled anatomy reflect his atelier training and deep engagement with Renaissance ideals of the heroic nude. The flesh is luminous and sculptural, recalling Michelangelo’s influence on the canon of the male body as both aesthetic and symbolic form. Yet Surdo decisively destabilizes the tradition. The arrows piercing the body are not lethal shafts but rubber suction-cup darts—objects associated with toys and staged play. This substitution transforms martyrdom into performance. The gravity of sacred suffering is undercut by irony, even absurdity. The saint is no longer impaled by instruments of death but by harmless projectiles, suggesting that contemporary suffering may be theatricalized, trivialized, or culturally mediated. At the same time, the figure’s expression remains sincere and emotionally vulnerable; the psychological intensity is real, even if the wounds are not. This tension between authentic emotion and artificial harm introduces a modern critique of spectacle—how pain can be aestheticized, simulated, or consumed. The graffiti-covered urban wall further collapses sacred history into contemporary space. Instead of a devotional landscape or heavenly backdrop, Surdo situates his Sebastian against a chaotic, tagged surface, merging classical beauty with raw urban immediacy. Saint Sebastian has long functioned not only as a symbol of faith but also as an emblem of sensualized male beauty and coded identity in art history. Surdo acknowledges that layered tradition while reframing it through irony and cultural commentary. By replacing deadly arrows with toy darts, he transforms martyrdom into a meditation on vulnerability in an age where suffering may be symbolic rather than fatal—performed, projected, or socially inflicted rather than divinely ordained. As in much of his work, Surdo grounds contemporary psychological tension in the authority of Renaissance form, using the language of history painting to question what sanctity, sacrifice, and spectacle mean today.
