Dale Nichols Art

American, 1904-1995
Artist, printmaker, illustrator, watercolorist, designer, writer and lecturer, Dale Nichols did paintings that reflected his rural background of Nebraska where he was born in David City, a small town. Although he did much sketching outdoors, most of his paintings were completed in his studio and often included "numerology, magic squares and psychic symbols." (Zellman 912) His painting The End of the Hunt (undated) won the Hearst Award at a 1930s exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago. In the 1960s, he traveled to Guatemala where he was much impressed by the lushness of the landscape and the Spanish and Mayan's culture. These interests were also reflected in his artwork. As a commercial artist, Nichols was an advocate of upgrading the quality of art in illustration and advertising. In 1935, his book elaborating his theories of art, A Philosphy of Esthetics, was published, and in 1957, he completed his book Figure Drawing, published by Watson-Guptill. Nichols, succeeding Iowa artist Grant Wood, was art editor of the Encyclopedia Britannica from 1942 to 1948, and in 1930-40, served as Carnegie visiting professor to the University of Illinois. As an early champion of good art in advertising and illustration, he created artwork for direct-mail industrial advertising in the 1930s and 40s. Nichols studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago with Carl Werntz, and with Joseph Binder in Vienna. During his career, he had eighteen solo exhibitions and exhibited in more than eighty regional and national exhibitions.

Mario Segundo Perez Argentine, 1960–2018 Sentimental Ink on Paper Dimensions: 7.5 X 9.75 with frame. sheet is 5 X 7 Does not appear to be signed on front (not examined out of frame. might be signed verso) Provenance: The Estate of Theodore A Bonin (Ted Bonin was a principal in Alexander and Bonin, a New York gallery known for its diverse slate of conceptual artists. He started at Marlborough gallery London in the 60s, then in partnership with Brooke Alexander. In its stable were a host of esteemed artists: Willie Cole, Rita McBride, John Ahearn, Paul Thek, Doris Salcedo, Eugenio Dittborn, Dalton Paula, and Rigoberto Torres, Mona Hatoum and Emily Jacir.) Mario Pérez was born in San Juan, Argentina in 1960. The second of seven children, and the son of a housepainter. He obtained his degree in Visual Arts at Universidad Nacional de San Juan in Argentina. A draughtsman and painter. His style was magic realist or fantastic realism In 2003, Pérez was the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant, one of his greatest achievements. He also had the honor of being part of the National Exhibition “200 Years-200 Masters of Argentinean Art”, commemorating the country’s bicentennial. Mario has won international distinctions such as the Cecilia Grierson Award at the Salón Nacional de Pintura in La Plata in 1992; the Marco A. Roca Award at the Salón Pro-Arte, Córdoba, also in 1992; and the first prize in the LXXXVIII Salón Nacional de Pintura in Buenos Aires in 1999. His art often features tiny figures in immense landscapes, and unique backgrounds. It has elements of Conceptual art. His work has been regularly featured in leading auction houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s in New York, and private and public collections. The magic realism of Mario Segundo Pérez is characteristic of a chiefly Latin-American concept in painting, literature and film that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into an otherwise realistic scenario. Coined in the 1940s by Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, the term often is used when referring to the Colombian novelist Gabriel Garcia Márquez, winner of the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature. Influences include Frida Kahlo and George Tooker. He was in shows with Ana Fabry and Eduardo Esquivel. Paintings by Pérez are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Ciudad Casa de Gobierno (the Buenos Aires City Hall); the University of Miami School of Architecture, and the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts (CARTA) at Florida International University. He has been in shows with Juan Cardenas, Anna Mercedes Hoyos, Ignacio Iturria, Alejandro Obregon, Domingo Ravenet, Arnaldo Roche, Edgar Negret, Fidelio Ponce de Leon, Ricardo Martinez, Damian Gonzalez, Jorge Jimenez Deredia, Victor...

A Serene 1940s, Modern Western Landscape Painting with Horses by Francis Chapin

By Francis Chapin

Located in Chicago, IL

A serene, 1940s Modern Western landscape painting with horses by famed Chicago artist, Francis Chapin. Accompanied with a handsome walnut brown stained wooden frame. Canvas size: 22 x 28 inches. Framed size: 25 x 31 inches. Estate stamped on reverse. Provenance: Estate of the artist. Francis Chapin, affectionately called the “Dean of Chicago Painters” by his colleagues, was one of the city’s most popular and celebrated painters in his day. Born at the dawn of the 20th Century in Bristolville, Ohio, Chapin graduated from Washington and Jefferson College near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania before enrolling at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922. He would set down deep roots at the Art Institute of Chicago, exhibiting there over 31 times between 1926 and 1951. In 1927 Chapin won the prestigious Bryan Lathrop Fellowship from the Art Institute – a prize that funded the artist’s yearlong study trip to Europe. Upon his return to the United States, Chapin decided to remain in Chicago, noting the freedom Chicago artists have in developing independently of the pressure to conform to pre-existing molds (as was experienced by artists in New York, for example). Chapin became a popular instructor at the Art Institute, teaching there from 1929 to 1947 and at the Art Institute’s summer art school in Saugatuck, Michigan (now called Oxbow) between 1934 – 1938 (he was the director of the school from 1941-1945). Chapin’s contemporaries among Chicago’s artists included such luminaries as Ivan Le Lorraine Albright...
