David Yarrow Photography

Scottish, b. 1966

David Yarrow, born 1966 in Scotland, took up photography at an early age, as a 20-year-old he found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, he took the sensationalized picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other high profile sporting events.

Many years later, Yarrow established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and recent years have been career-defining for his mark on the world of contemporary fine art photography.

Yarrow’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is most distinctive and has earned him an ever-growing following among art collectors and celebrities. His distinct large monochrome images made in Los Angeles are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. Yarrow is now recognized as one of the best-selling fine art photographers in the world and his limited edition works regularly sell at high prices at Sotheby’s and other auction houses.

In September 2019, Rizzoli published their second book by Yarrow, with a personal foreword written by global NFL star Tom Brady and thoughtful afterword written by American cultural icon and supermodel Cindy Crawford. All royalties from the book have been donated to conservation charities Tusk in the UK and WildAid in the US.

Yarrow's position in the industry has been rewarded with a wide range of advisory and ambassadorial roles. He is an ambassador for WildArk and The Kevin Richardson Foundation and is the European ambassador for Nikon. Yarrow has been integral to Nikon's most anticipated camera release of the last decade. In December 2017, he shot LVMH’s latest “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign with Cara Delevingne. In January 2019, he was appointed as a global ambassador for UBS. In the spring of 2020, Yarrow was appointed a global ambassador for Best Buddies – one of America’s most established children’s charities.

Yarrow became an ambassador for the African Community and Conservation Foundation and presented his work in the Endangered Rangers virtual fundraiser. At the start of 2020, Yarrow was in Australia documenting the devastating bush fires that have destroyed communities, wildlife and wildlands. Using the striking images that he captured of the effects of the fire, he launched the #KoalaComeback Campaign to support the recovery efforts in Australia. The campaign raised over $1.4 million, and as Yarrow continues to work for humanitarian causes, his steadfast determination continues to make positive change for the benefit of global awareness. Currently, Yarrow continues to create stunning imagery with lasting global impact and archival quality that speaks to his reverence for the art of photography in capturing the wonders of the world.

Its popularity was not just its cheekiness, but also its simplicity. This was the era of Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert and the sport was very much on the rise in the public’s consciousness. It was the start of an era in which tennis landed an integral role within popular culture and the stars themselves often became sex symbols. Tennis was sexy. When filming our Palm Beach series, I had been given access to a beautiful home on North Country Drive just north of The Breakers. The property faced the Atlantic and the vast verdant lawns stretching to the beach were of Wimbledon standard. Towering palm trees soared to the sky breaking the symmetry and offered a definite sense of place. This was very clearly the ocean front...

Its authentic western vibe draws hundreds of visitors a day and yet despite this fame, the joint retains a folksy charm. That is quite a trick. It is the epicentre of the Jackson Hole community and probably always will be. Clint Eastwood has acted in the bar (Any Which Way You Can), Willie Nelson and Hank Williams Jr have sung there and I thought it was high time we filmed there. I was drawn to the ageless facade of the bar, with its retro neon lighting and famous rotating cowboy on horseback sign on the roof. My creative pondering never departed much from the premise that this backdrop offered a definitive sense of place and had to be paid homage to. Neon lights don’t do themselves justice during the day, but as the bar is busy until closing, 365 days a year, shooting at night offered challenges. The solution was to film at 5.30 am and, on the morning of the shoot, this offered some bonuses as there was fresh snow and a temperature of 0°F. This extreme cold allowed the exhaust fumes from the Ford Bronco to add more drama to the set. I think a few cowboys were left a little disappointed with the manner of the cowgirl’s departure in this tableau. To leave the bar alone is one thing, but to leave with a wolf must have been distressing for all her courters. We would like to acknowledge John Baxter...

Available Sizes: Standard 37" x 44" Unframed 52" x 59" Framed Edition of 12 Large 56" x 66" Unframed 71" x 81" Framed Edition of 12 “The grandeur of the Tetons has been celebrated by artists for 150 years. It was an integral part of Thomas Moran’s life and, of course, the mountain range played a material role in the photographic journey of Ansel Adams. His legacy still holds a tight grip on a Jackson Hole community hosting hundreds of capable photographers every week. As an artist, it is a place in which to enjoy the visual overload rather than attempt to break new ground; that would be a fine trick. I have long been an admirer of the photographer Tommy Mangelsen whose body of work is a love letter to this pocket of America. For many years we have shared the same New York Publisher - Rizzoli - and he sets a high bar with his body of authentic images in the Tetons and beyond. I have a good friend in Jackson, who, for many years, has made a living by ploughing snow on private roads in the winter months. It is his business to know every road in the community and in the days before my arrival he scouted the land either side of these single-track roads for big bull moose. They are not that hard to find in the area near Kelly - especially in late November and December - but I needed to be in situ very early in the day. It was never going to be easy to get a Cigar Shot as there needs to be a sense of place in any picture taken here. Not to include the Tetons in the frame would be akin to filming in Zermatt and not including the Matterhorn. They are on a par as backdrops. To have the Tetons as a canvas requires a high cloud...

I knew it offered potential because the dusty amphitheatre was framed by sizeable mountains to the south and west. Also, there was one solitary tree standing out from the scrubland, which could be used as a prop. It immediately looked like a place where people would camp in the fabled days of the American West. With that in mind, we arranged for an antique wagon...

Available Sizes: Standard 37" x 72" Unframed 52" x 87" Framed Edition of 12 Large 52.5" x 102" Unframed 67.5" x 117" Framed Edition of 12 "Train robbers hold a firm place in the mythological lore of the American West. Attacks on trains were a common occurrence when the rule of law was either difficult to implement or simply non-existent. Thin governance was an accepted danger on the Final Frontier. What is perhaps surprising is that history has looked fondly on the bandits, as if their means of living was laudable and even romantic. Our affection for the underdog knows no bounds and Hollywood played to this emotion by often characterising the bandits as lovable and misunderstood rogues. The narrative was often that the bad guys were the train owners for having the wealth in the first place; maybe they had disposable moral fibre as well. It was a dog-eat-dog world. No more was this better articulated than in the classic 1969 Western buddy film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford. The film - which was loosely based on fact - cemented both actors at the top of the Hollywood A-list, not just because of their acting, but because the public found affection for their characters and their affable, wise cracking roles. It was as if they played the good...

From a filming perspective, we are drawn to bars with depth and then it helps if the walls and ceilings are elaborately embroidered with authentic props that emphatically play to a western vibe. They need to have history and a lore. But these are not really demanding qualification rules, and we need some stronger filters. For a start, we think that the saloon must have hard liquor available at breakfast and the bar staff should greet early customers with a smile that suggests a sense of partnership throughout the day. The door policy should be accommodating to men with no cultural refinement and women with no moral compass and allow cowboy capitalists to mingle freely with outlaws, cattle wranglers and enthusiastic pole dancers. The only real restriction, is that entry is conditional on wearing a decent and well worn cowboy hat. I think, however, the best cowboy bars...
