David Yarrow Photography

Scottish, b. 1966

David Yarrow, born 1966 in Scotland, took up photography at an early age, as a 20-year-old he found himself working as a photographer for The London Times on the pitch at the World Cup Final in Mexico City. On that day, he took the sensationalized picture of Diego Maradona holding the World Cup and, as a result, was subsequently asked to cover the Olympics and numerous other high profile sporting events.

Many years later, Yarrow established himself as a fine art photographer by documenting the natural world from new perspectives and recent years have been career-defining for his mark on the world of contemporary fine art photography.

Yarrow’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is most distinctive and has earned him an ever-growing following among art collectors and celebrities. His distinct large monochrome images made in Los Angeles are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. Yarrow is now recognized as one of the best-selling fine art photographers in the world and his limited edition works regularly sell at high prices at Sotheby’s and other auction houses.

In September 2019, Rizzoli published their second book by Yarrow, with a personal foreword written by global NFL star Tom Brady and thoughtful afterword written by American cultural icon and supermodel Cindy Crawford. All royalties from the book have been donated to conservation charities Tusk in the UK and WildAid in the US.

Yarrow's position in the industry has been rewarded with a wide range of advisory and ambassadorial roles. He is an ambassador for WildArk and The Kevin Richardson Foundation and is the European ambassador for Nikon. Yarrow has been integral to Nikon's most anticipated camera release of the last decade. In December 2017, he shot LVMH’s latest “Don’t Crack Under Pressure” campaign with Cara Delevingne. In January 2019, he was appointed as a global ambassador for UBS. In the spring of 2020, Yarrow was appointed a global ambassador for Best Buddies – one of America’s most established children’s charities.

Yarrow became an ambassador for the African Community and Conservation Foundation and presented his work in the Endangered Rangers virtual fundraiser. At the start of 2020, Yarrow was in Australia documenting the devastating bush fires that have destroyed communities, wildlife and wildlands. Using the striking images that he captured of the effects of the fire, he launched the #KoalaComeback Campaign to support the recovery efforts in Australia. The campaign raised over $1.4 million, and as Yarrow continues to work for humanitarian causes, his steadfast determination continues to make positive change for the benefit of global awareness. Currently, Yarrow continues to create stunning imagery with lasting global impact and archival quality that speaks to his reverence for the art of photography in capturing the wonders of the world.

The Longhorn Saloon
By David Yarrow
Located in Chicago, IL
The Longhorn Saloon West Texas - 2023 Edition Size: 12 + 3 APs Available sizes: 52 X 80 inches 71 X 113 inches All prints are on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper and varnished after processing to give both endurance and sheen. Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Price includes David Yarrow's custom black ash frame, white archival matting and protective UV acrylic. "From the outside, The Longhorn Saloon looks like a bar where the most ancient of vices are catered for daily. It has the whiff of a place where cowboys are tough, women are tougher and there is little rule of law. It is the Wild West at its cartoonish best. The Coen Brothers should check it out. The Longhorn is clearly a Texas bar and we would say that it’s in West Texas, but more than that, we are sworn to secrecy. It’s too good a place to get crowded and besides, the cattle clearly need some room to roam. Projects like these tend to be fun for everyone involved and when we do film at dusk, there is never a doubt that after the wrap, some local cast or crew will invite us home for a Texan Barbecue. They score very high in hospitality in Texas and we love our nights out near the Mexican Border...

I think that’s about right - it’s not easy at 10,000 feet in the rainforest, and the best of my work now hangs in the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Fund in Kinigi, Rwanda. I am glad they don’t display my average pictures, of which there are many. I recently had the chance to work on a fundraiser with another great American conservationist - Ramona Bass - a legendary figure in Fort Worth - who has offered a sanctuary for displaced Western Lowland Gorillas for many years. The male adult Lowland gorillas have less hair than mountain gorillas and, as a result, look more human. The most famous of these under Ramona’s care is a 33-year-old silverback called Elmo, who can be photographed from a distance at certain times of the day. He is a handsome boy...

By David Yarrow

Available in two sizes. High-end framing on request. Limited edition of 12. Each artwork is done and signed by the artist. The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. "19th century artists often depicted Native Americans as passive contextual narrative in railroad images; they are present but only to frame the story, not make the story. They simply establish the scene. This was my intent one cold February morning at Horseshoe Bend on the famous Durango & Silverton Railroad high in the San Jose Mountains. The Native American is not on the bend to attack, he is there simply to proudly show his presence. It is for the viewer to imagine how the next five minutes unfolded.” – David Yarrow on “The Manifest Destiny...

The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. "Local builder, Johannes Badrutt, was the founding father of St Moritz as we know it now and is credited with being the inventor of vast luxury Alpine hotels. Badrutt established a new level of opulence when he opened the Engadiner Kulm in the 1860s and meanwhile his son, Caspar, bought an existing hotel - The Beau Rivage - in 1884 and officially enlarged it into the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in 1896. With its vast drawing rooms, elaborate furnishing and Neo Gothic architecture, Badrutt’s soon became an institution. Its clientele was not just the Swiss, but the British upper classes who were drawn to the strong winter suns of St Moritz and all sorts of thrill chasing events on the ice. By the turn of the century, the town was Europe’s winter...

The collector receives an additional certificate of authenticity from the gallery. "My cowboy worked as a cowboy extra and handler in another Taylor Sheridan series - 1883 - and it is easy to see why he and Sam Elliott got along. This one split second image caught my notice straight away as there is an anonymity to his face. We don’t need to see his eyes, because this is not a story about him per se, it is a story about the loosely governed wild west, where cowboys like him often made a living from doing shady things. He is playing to a genre before he is playing himself." - David Yarrow on "Red Dead...

I knew from the moment that I undertook this project, that a single photograph would fail if I didn’t convey, not just a sense of place, or the sport itself, but a sense of “Club”. The Cresta Club, officially known as the St Moritz Tobogganing Club, has been in existence since 1887 and remains one of St Moritz’s most exclusive institutions - and there are quite a few. It has a very British stamp to it and there is a sense of being at an old boys reunion at Harrow, but it welcomes all nations and all characters. For what could be a rather stuffy golf club culture, it is defined by its lack of stuffiness. It is a Club where people have fun and refuse to grow up and surely that should always be applauded. My dilemma was how to take a picture that was authentic, fun and told a story of its members. I needed the track and a rider, but I also needed the faces in the crowd. For safety reasons these subjects tend to be mutually exclusive. The solution was for me to positioned just down the track from the start and roped in like a mountaineer so that I didn’t travel down the course on my backside with my cameras. I knew already how treacherous it is as I slipped in my early morning reconnaissance and lost a tooth. The Cresta Run...

Red Dead
By David Yarrow
Located in Chicago, IL
Durango, Colorado - 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 12 In the mountains of America, my experience is that the really cold conditions tend to be on cloudless days first thing in the morning, particularly at sunrise when the temperature briefly dips. Operating when it is frigid is a real examination, not just of one’s hunger to get the shot but one’s fluency with the camera. Hand warmers are such a wonderful invention. This morning, up on the Durango & Silverton narrow gauge railroad, was one such occasion. The storm had cleared and was replaced by a cloudless sky and frigid temperatures. At sunrise we were down to around -15°F or -26°C and these conditions offered so much potential for the filmmaker as everything froze - from human beards and human breath to horse breath. I am always nervous of boring people and anything in a picture that defies gravity tends to work for me as it adds energy and dynamism. The props I had that morning gave every chance to fully embrace this modus operandi - especially if my camera was pointed directly either side of the rising sun. My cowboy - who is a dead ringer for Rip from the Yellowstone Series - is a charming Texan called Cole Nallion rather than Cole Hauser who plays Rip Wheeler. Cole worked as a cowboy extra and handler in another Taylor Sheridan series - 1883 - and it is easy to see why he and Sam Elliott got along. This one split second image caught my notice straight away as there is an anonymity to his face. We don’t need to see his eyes, because this is not a story about him per se, it is a story about the loosely governed wild west, where cowboys like him often made a living from doing shady things. He is playing to a genre before he is playing himself. The photograph has a Red Dead...

Durango, Colorado - 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 20 I am not ashamed of the fact that I often have an audience in my mind when I take a shot. In this case in the Diamond Belle Saloon in Durango, Colorado, my instincts were that it would appeal more if the frame was busy because my experience with this famous old wild west bar is that it is always something of a gathering place for all those who like a drink. It is how bars should be and is celebrated as such. I want the audience to say; “I wish I was in that bar that night” or even “we need more interesting people...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "This portrait taken at around 11,000 feet in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda was as hard earned as any portrait I have taken. It can be a slog up the mountain in the rainy season and even when you encounter a silverback, so many variables that are beyond anyone’s control have to work in the favor of the artist. Firstly, I prefer cloud cover, as a strong sun scattering shafts of intense light through the canopy of the rainforest is not a good bedfellow for portraiture. Secondly, I always prefer some degree of room to work with and 50% of my trips up that hill have not given me that opportunity - the vegetation is just too dense - on the ground and above. I do need some light to play with to help my depth of focus. Thirdly, the silverback has to play ball - and that is not easy - in my experience the earlier the encounter in the day, the greater the opportunity of meeting an alert and compliant gorilla. This is the son of Kwitonda - a famous silverback who passed away recently and it is this son who is now the Governor...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "Developing a concept that ticks the boxes creatively and then executing that concept are emphatically two different jobs, which is why making a picture is a longer process than taking a picture. Many years ago, the exceptional work of British photographer Tim Flach, drew my attention to the hot springs of Myvatn in the north of Iceland. This remote area is geologically angry and in deep winter...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "A treasure trove of characters in a dive bar saloon in Western Montana. The question is, who would you want as your partner? Do you go for perceived experience or looks? The suave gentleman on the left looks the part, but he could be a little callow and raw. It may pay to go with the menace to his left. Looks can be deceiving. The wolf carries an assertive confidence and seems to be holding court, but he is, after all, a wolf. Singer and entertainer Ciara looks too good to be playing pool and surely she can’t have much experience hustling in pool bars? It’s beneath her. But how can you turn her down? The answer is to go with the character on the left - he is one of the best performing rookies of all time. Russell Wilson’s Rookie year at the Seattle Seahawks (the 2012 season) was the stuff of legends. He was named NFL Rookie of the Year and took the Seahawks to within one game of the Superbowl. (This despite being 75th in the 2012 NFL draft). He only had to wait 12 months to cement his status. In early 2014, Wilson led the Seahawks to their first Superbowl victory in which they trounced the marginal favourites, the Denver Broncos...
