One was always going to be its storied maritime past, and in particular its leading position in the whaling industry. Then there are certain features on the island that if included in an image would reinforce a sense of place - such as Nantucket Grey buildings and of course the lighthouses. But in our production meetings in the run up to the assignment, there was one feature I kept on requesting that we prioritised - the cobbled streets. When I think of Nantucket, I think of the cobbles - particularly on Main Street - not only because of their aesthetic appeal, but also because they tell a story of the island’s British roots. Perhaps we could then celebrate life on the final frontier with a photograph that could be printed large and benefit from the extraordinary resolution of modern-day cameras. I wanted a vignette with picturesque sentimentality. The community of Durango, Colorado was so supportive of the plan that 80 extras were sourced with no difficulty and there was warm approval to build the set near the main ski area in the region; the wonderfully named Purgatory. America's Team Dallas, Texas - 2023 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Edition Size: 20 Available sizes: Standard Image Size: 37" x 57" Framed Size: 52" x 72" Large Image Size: 56" x 86" Framed Size: 71" x 101" Artist Statement: There are no more celebrated Dallas Cowboys than Roger Staubach and Troy Aikman and the chance to photograph them together was high on my bucket list. Equally, with opportunity comes reponsibility. My sense was that a single frame had to pay homage to the great city of Dallas and the world’s most valuable sports franchise as well as it’s two greatest quarterbacks. That’s not an easy brief, but I knew of a downtown location in the East Quarter that offered a generous level of context. Using a car to build a story is not alien to us. It is a prop that not only offers opportunity, but it also gives reason and plausibility for the presence of the protagonists. The 1979 Lincoln Continental we opted for had the necessary length that I was looking for in the composition and by good fortune was a nod to the time the Cowboys became known as “America’s Team”. 1979 was also Staubach’s last NFL season, so the car worked both optically and historically. The nickname America’s Team originated with the 1978 franchise film, in which the narrator (John Facenda) opened with the following introduction: “They appear on television so often that their faces are as familiar to the public as presidents and movie stars. They are the Dallas Cowboys, “America’s Team”. The name stuck and much of the credit for that lies with quarterbacks - Roger and Troy - the winners of five Super Bowls between them and two legends of the game. Moving forward to 2023, and their post-game careers have set an example for former professional athletes, Roger as a genuine innovator in real estate and Troy as the leading sports pundit of his generation. My sense was that I needed the two great men to be in conversation and for there to be an implicit sense of brotherhood and mutual respect. Roger - a Heisman Trophy...

The photograph places British models David Gandy and Bella di Lorenzo in a banged up 1961 Sunbeam Rapier with the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop. I know the area well and the image was easy to preconceive, but damn hard to capture. The topography of the coast here in Devon is not dissimilar to the film location of Bodega Bay in northern California and I found a road location that would work well with the morning light. It was always our intention to do a sequel, but Covid put paid to that in 2020. However, the delay gave me time to consider various options for the story line and fine tune logistics. The unanimous choice for round two was to shoot the boat scene with the FBI agents. For many it is the most memorable scene in the whole movie and of course there is intense competition for that top spot. In May of this year we had an opportunity to shoot our sequel off the coast of Marina del Rey in Los Angeles. I had so much more light to play with than in the dealing room shot and my instinct was to be bold in the amount of content I could include in one frame. Indeed, I had to work on the basis that the one frame had to tell the full story, otherwise the job would not have been done properly. This is one of the challenges of still photography...
