The Amphitheatre of Loch Lomond from the Water Mill at Ross-Ben Lomond Scotland
Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire
The Amphitheatre of Loch Lomond from the Water Mill at Ross-Ben Lomond by John Wilson Ewbank, RSA (1799-1847) signed and inscribed with title verso oil on millboard, 24.5 x 35cms, plus frame provenance: private collection, Scottish borders Very fine and beautiful antique oil painting of this important view in Scotland, depicting the ever beautiful Loch Lomond. The painting is by the very well listed John Wilson Ewbank (1799-1847). John Wilson Ewbank (English, 4 May 1799–28 November 1847), was an English-born landscape and marine painter who was renowned for his naturalistic landscapes and seascapes of the Scottish borders and the North East coast of England. Ewbank was born at Darlington on 4 May 1799, the son of Michael Ewbank, an innkeeper. He was adopted as a child by a wealthy uncle who lived at Wycliffe, on the banks of the River Tees, in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Intended for the Roman Catholic priesthood, he was sent to Ushaw College, from which he absconded. In 1813 Ewbank was apprenticed to Thomas Coulson, an ornamental painter in Newcastle. In around 1816 he moved with Coulson to Edinburgh, where he was also taught by Alexander Nasmyth (1758-1840), a popular painter amongst the Scottish and English nobility. Ewbank found work both as a painter and a teacher. He was nominated in 1830 one of the foundation members of the Royal Scottish Academy. In 1833 he is listed as living at 7 Union Street on the eastern fringe of the New Town in Edinburgh. Sadly after the death of his wife he descended into depression and was stripped of his status as an academician in 1838 and died in poverty of typhus in Sunderland in 1847. Ewbank’s calm seascapes were strongly influenced by 17th Century Dutch artists, particularly Willem and Adriaen Van de Velde. Although his best work dates from his early years, Ewbank became a popular and wealthy art teacher in the capital where made a reputation with cabinet pictures of banks of rivers, coast scenes, and marine subjects. Ewbank’s sketches from nature were especially admired, and a series of 51 drawings of Edinburgh by him were engraved by W. H. Lizars for James Browne's Picturesque Views of Edinburgh (1825). He was also noted as a painter of landscapes and seascapes as exemplified in this painting. The busy port of South Shields is located on the south side of the mouth of the River Tyne, Northumberland. The settlement was founded by the Romans in AD80 when Agricola built a fort on the Lawe Top. The Romans used it as a supply base for Hadrian’s Wall and by the 5th Century, South Shields was a major Roman military stronghold and commercial centre. By 1500, South Shields had become an important seaport, trading primarily in timber, lead, coal and salt. The first shipbuilding yard was established by Robert Wallis in about 1720, he was soon followed by others, including Thomas Marshall...

Spaniels and a terrier in a landscape
By Edmund Bristow
Located in Stoke, Hampshire
Edmund Bristow (1787-1876) Spaniels and a terrier in a landscape Oil on canvas Canvas size 14 x 19 in Framed size - 16 1/2 x 21 1/4 Edmund Bristow was born in Windsor on 1st April 1787 and spent his whole life there. He had a reputation as rather reclusive and consequently not much is known of the background details of his life. When he died in 1876, the Art Journal could find almost nothing to write about in its obituary of him such was the privacy of his life. His father was a heraldic painter and probably gave his son his early instruction in painting. Bristow often favoured painting small works often painted on wooden panel with scenes around his native Windsor and Eton with meadows, pools and heath land with finely observed animals and found a good market for these among the local populace and from the school. He has been described as the "Little Master of English landscape painting" and Grant writes of his technique: "…with beautiful brushwork and immaculate liquid impasto he reproduced atmospheric effects of actual grandeur, often with the lurid lilac tone of an impending thunderstorm or the haze of a midsummer afternoon." In his small works, the careful and meticulous detail emulated the manner and technique of the cabinet paintings from the 17th century Dutch Golden age. Another critic wrote: "Usually known for his exquisitely detailed oils in small scale, he also painted larger canvases with delightful sensitivity and skill." The subject matter portrayed in Bristow's work was wide and included domestic interiors, street scenes with shops particularly in Windsor and its environs, landscapes, some portraits and equestrian portraits and open air genre scenes with boys at play, and still life as well as a large selection of sporting scenes - particularly favouring shooting and coursing subjects - and animals. Some of his pictures were humorous compositions such as "Before the Monkey Duel," "A Monkey holding up a Notary" and "Dispensing of medical electricity (electrotherapy)." He was a friend of the outstanding Victorian animal painter Sir Edwin Landseer and it is believed that Bristow gave advice and assistance to the younger artist. Early in his career, Bristow had secured some important patrons which included Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Clarence who later became William IV. However, for an artist of such marked ability and acuity, his output seems lower than one might expect, especially considering that he lived until he was eighty-nine. His temperament may well have had a lot to do with this as he was known to hold strong and eccentric views. Furthermore, he rarely worked to order and even when a piece was completed, would then refuse to sell it. He ceased painting altogether in 1847, thirty years before he died on 12th February 1876, for reasons which have never been established and one can only assume that apart from his contrariness, he must have been financially secure enough not to have to work. He exhibited twelve works at the Royal Academy, eleven at the British Institution and eight at the Royal Society of British Artists. Some examples of these works are: "Sporting dogs," "Terriers and rabbit," "A smith shoeing a horse," "Portrait of Jefferies, many years an earth-stopper to the Berkeley hounds," "Portrait of Mr Norman...
