Ginny Williams is an American artist currently living and working in New England.
Her art training began at an early age when she was given the opportunity to study with working artists as part of her elementary and secondary education. In college, while auditing painting classes on the side, she chose to earn her degree in art history-something she sees as highly valuable to her development and career as an artist. It was during these studies that she gained an appreciation for the broad scope of artistic expression over the centuries. She has a particular fondness for the northern European artists of the 17th and 18th centuries alongside much art of the late 19th century. She finds inspiration in artists’ ability to imbue everyday objects and scenes of daily life with a dignity and meaning above what is gained with a cursory glance. In her work, Williams strives to make pieces both beautiful, thoughtful, and able to speak to contemporary life despite their traditional style.
Initially self-taught, Williams studied at several classical ateliers over the course of ten years, learning the methods and materials employed for centuries by artists. Her work has been shown at galleries around the country and she is currently represented at galleries in Atlanta, Cleveland, Portsmouth and Wenham. Williams maintains a studio in Wenham, MA, as well as one in Amesbury, MA, alongside her husband, the painter Donald Jurney.

About the Painting
From a distance, Beckwith deftly captures the spectacle of a Hollywood premiere. But we have not been invited to the party. Our view is from the shadows of a less glamorous neighborhood with a shaggy, unkept palm tree and rundown buildings in the shadows. We look down through the darkness past a packed parking lot to the bright lights of two iconic Hollywood landmarks, the Pantages Theater and the Broadway Building. Completed in 1930, the Pantages was built as an exuberant Art Deco movie palace, while the Broadway Building housed an upscale department store which catered to entertainment industry elites who were less impacted by the Great Depression than the common man, since movies had become the mainstay of popular culture entertainment during the 1930s with large numbers of Americans looking to immerse themselves in Hollywood escapism. This colorful late spring scene is most likely around Erie, Pennsylvania. Artist and teacher Joseph M. Plavcan generally painted around the area in which he lived for over 50 years.
Joseph Michael Plavcan was born near Pittsburg, in Braddock. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy in 1926, studying with renowned New Hope artist Daniel Garber. Through a scholarship, he went to Europe to study. He returned to Erie in 1932 and became an art instructor, teaching for the next 38 years. Plavcan went far beyond teaching trade school requirements and instilled a true sense of sophisticated artistry in his students. During his artistic career, he exhibited often in Philadelphia, Washington, New York and Chicago.
This painting, oil on canvas, demonstrates Plavcan’s style, utilizing figurative abstraction with a modernist color palette. The paint is not over applied and areas are treated with smooth broad brush strokes. The hint of late blooming leaves are dashes of paint applied in a fast yet confident manner. Plavcan’s sense of light, demonstrated in the distant church tower is spot on.
While not signed, there are two official estate stamps on the reverse that attest to the authenticity of Plavcan’s work. The piece measures 16” x 20” and appears to be canvas applied to a back board. This was likely done by the former retailer, Hudson House Galleries in Hagerstown, Maryland. That shop was a fine regional art gallery and antiques shop for decades until its closure about five years ago. The painting is nicely framed in a modernist gold wood frame with a subtle pink liner. The overall framed dimensions are about 20” x 24”. The painting is in very good condition, bright and crisp. There is a very minor vertical crease above the peak of the house that is truly barely noticeable from any distance. Other than that, all is fine with the work and its frame.

GC Williams has a BA in art history and began her artistic career as a self-taught artist. She subsequently studied at several classical ateliers including 4 years at the Academy of Realist Art, Boston. Influenced heavily by her studies of and love for the art of the northern European Renaissance, she creates still life paintings that employ chiaroscuro and symbolism to point beyond themselves to more enduring truths. Just as the still life masters of long ago used everyday objects to convey timeless messages pertinent to the culture of the day, Williams’ works often have underlying symbolism in the placement and combination of objects she chooses to paint. With tight renderings and playfulness she attempts to draw the viewer beyond an initial appreciation of a pretty picture into a deeper engagement and understanding of the language of the still life.
