Country Cottage
By Abraham Hulk the Younger
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Late 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting in the manner of Abraham Hulk the Younger (1851-1922), this painting was acquired by Saltire Gallerie with a larger painting signed by Hulk the Younger, (just SOLD). Presented in a period decorative gilt frame, the painting is of a cottage in a woodland with cattle by a pond, a little black dog and man and a woman standing by. In the distance is a glimpse of a river and grasses, framed by trees and an overcast sky. Hulk is renowned for his treatment of the changing season from summer to autumn, and the golden leaves and fading greens in this painting suggest this changing time of year. Hulk is the son of a well known Dutch maritime...

The first depicts Highland sheep on a hillside with a Scottish loch below. The second painting shows Highland cattle grazing on cliffs overlooking the sea. At the time of these paintings, Gallon was living at 32 Alma Square in St John’s Wood and they were most likely painted during one of his excursions to the Highlands. Robert Gallon was a landscape painter born in Deptford, Kent in 1845 to the artist Robert Samuel Ennis Gallon (1807-1867) and his wife Cecilia Ann Russell. He lived with his family at Evelyn Place in Deptford. He was most likely tutored by his father; however, his subject matter was inspired by artists such as Benjamin Williams Leader and George Vicat Cole. Gallon began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1868 and in 1873 made his debut at Royal Academy from an address at 12, Tavistock Row, Covent Garden. He was a regular contributor to both galleries, continuing to exhibit at the RSBA until 1893 and at the RA until 1903. He also exhibited at some of the smaller establishments including the Hampstead Art Society, Mendoza Gallery and St James’s Gallery as well as at provincial galleries. By 1876, he had moved to 28 Alma Square in St John’s Wood. He married Catherine Elizabeth Atkinson on 18 July, 1877 and together they had 3 children...

Oil painting of Scottish Highland cattle near a castle, Antique, 19th century
By Henry Hadfield Cubley
Located in Woodbury, CT
FIne quality oil on canvas of cattle watering by Dunstaffnag Castle, Scotland. Henry Hadfield Cubley was born in Newark, Nottinghamshire in 1858. Henry was the nephew of William Cubley, an influential figure in Henry’s life, as not only was William a teacher and a previous Mayor of Newark, but also an accomplished landscape artist. Henry became a successful artist in his own right, moving to Matlock Bath, Derbyshire in 1888, and going on to exhibit at the Birmingham Salon and the Royal Academy on numerous occasions. Henry’s vibrant country scenes are instantly recognizable for their atmospheric quality, as well as the artist’s sensitively rendered depictions of highland cattle. Henry was often drawn to the rugged beauty of Wales and Scotland’s mountainous regions, which provided inspiration for some of his most sought-after works. The artist’s last exhibition at the Royal Academy was in 1902, after which he continued to paint and immerse himself in the landscapes he loved up...
