Jean-Baptiste Duffaud Art
French, 1853-1927
Jean-Baptiste Duffaud studied at the École des beaux-arts de Marseille under the direction of Dominique Antoine Magaud (1817–99). Wishing to complete his artistic training, he went to Paris and received the teaching of Jean-Léon Gérôme. He exhibited at the Salon from 1875–92, obtaining several honorable mentions. He was awarded the prestigious Marie Bashkirtseff prize in 1891 and was promoted to Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1906. Duffaud's works are preserved in the Musée Calvet d'Avignon, Musée de Troyes and Musée d'art Moderne in Paris.

Jules Van Biesbroeck was the son of Jules Evariste van Biesbroeck, a painter of Ghent, but was born in Italy, in Portici, near Naples, while his parents were staying there. (In the 19th century many artists made educational trips to Italy). It was a long visit: the child was two years old by the time the family returned to Ghent.[1]
After a short period of practice with his father, van Biesbroeck was enrolled in the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. His first painting, "The Shepherd" (French: Le pâtre), was sold at the Triennale in Ghent.
