Antique Bohemian Enamelled Glass Vase Hookah Base 19th C Vintage Decorative Art

Antique Bohemian Enamelled Glass Hookah Base, c. 1880–1910 Elegant late 19th-century Bohemian hookah (nargile) base in clear optic-ribbed glass, richly decorated with hand-painted polychrome enamel floral sprays and scrolling gilt ornament. The bulbous body rises to a tall flared neck, while the underside features a finely cut starburst design, demonstrating the quality of its manufacture. Produced for the flourishing export trade to Ottoman and Middle Eastern markets, this example combines the vibrant enamel decoration and refined glass working for which Bohemian workshops were renowned during the period. The delicate floral motifs remain bright and attractive, complemented by original gilding around the top foot and decorative borders. A striking decorative object in its own right, the piece also represents an increasingly sought-after category of 19th-century Islamic-market export glass. Details Origin: Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic) Date: Circa 1880–1910 Material: Hand-enamelled and gilt cut glass Height: 40 cm (15¾ in.) Antique and Vintage Vases for Sale

Whether it’s a Chinese Han dynasty glazed ceramic wine vessel, a work of Murano glass or a hand-painted Scandinavian modern stoneware piece, a fine vase brings a piece of history into your space as much as it adds a sophisticated dynamic.

Like sculptures or paintings, antique and vintage vases are considered works of fine art. Once offered as tributes to ancient rulers, vases continue to be gifted to heads of state today. Over time, decorative porcelain vases have become family heirlooms to be displayed prominently in our homes — loved pieces treasured from generation to generation.

The functional value of vases is well known. They were traditionally utilized as vessels for carrying dry goods or liquids, so some have handles and feature an opening at the top (where they flare back out). While artists have explored wildly sculptural alternatives over time, the most conventional vase shape is characterized by a bulbous base and a body with shoulders where the form curves inward.

Owing to their intrinsic functionality, vases are quite possibly versatile in ways few other art forms can match. They’re typically taller than they are wide. Some have a neck that offers height and is ideal for the stems of cut flowers. To pair with your mid-century modern decor, the right vase will be an elegant receptacle for leafy snake plants on your teak dining table, or, in the case of welcoming guests on your doorstep, a large ceramic floor vase for long tree branches or sticks — perhaps one crafted in the Art Nouveau style — works wonders.

Interior designers include vases of every type, size and style in their projects — be the canvas indoors or outdoors — often introducing a splash of color and a range of textures to an entryway or merely calling attention to nature’s asymmetries by bringing more organically shaped decorative objects into a home.

On 1stDibs, you can browse our collection of vases by material, including ceramic, glass, porcelain and more. Sizes range from tiny bud vases to massive statement pieces and every size in between.

Questions About Vases

To tell how old your vase is, you'll need to do some research using trusted online resources. Begin by determining who produced your vase, if possible. You can start by examining your vase for a maker's mark. Then, you can learn more about the maker to find out when pieces similar to yours were produced. If you have difficulty locating a marking, try snapping a photo of your vase and conducting a reverse image search to try and identify your piece and learn its age. Alternatively, a certified appraiser or knowledgeable antique dealer can assist you with the dating process. On 1stDibs, find a large collection of vases.

No, generally, you can't put water in a clay vase. Because clay is a porous material, it will absorb water readily, and in some cases, clay vessels filled with water may leak. However, you can purchase liners to put inside a clay vase if you wish to use it to display fresh flowers. On 1stDibs, explore a large selection of vases.

The top of a vase is called the mouth. People refer to the top edge of a vase as its rim or mouth rim. On a vase with a narrow section that connects the mouth with the rest of the piece, that area is known as the neck, while the part below the neck is the body or base.
