In the far north of Namibia as you head towards the border with Angola at Epupa Falls, barely visible tracks radiate off the main dirt road into bush and disappear across sandy, dry river beds. Arid conditions and past hunting have left few animals and the barren terrain create few obvious landmarks, but the Himba are able to navigate easily. Himba villages have a circular boundary around the kraal (village) staked out by tall, tightly packed branches and a single route in and out. The outer wall surrounds a number of huts, each inhabited by one of the man’s wives and her children. Sometimes there are 6, 7 or more wives in the Himba kraal, and a lot of children! I met this Sadhu with such kind eyes in Kashi (another name for Varanasi) on one of the chaotic ghats. We tried and failed to take the portrait as crowds and sacred cows constantly streamed between us. Fortunately a group of young boat-hands gave up their relatively sheltered corner of the ghat, where they had been gambling over cards, to give us five minutes of calm space. John uses simple natural light and builds primitive makeshift studios from locally acquired white sheets! The suffuse light allows him to capture a remarkable level of detail. His subjects calm demeanor belies the reality of harsh arid winds, extreme temperatures and dust.
