Mark Tobey drawing on W. H. Auden poem from Henry Moore book/portfolio
By Mark Tobey
Located in New York, NY
Exuberant, dancing marks in purple, red, green and blue surround the first two verses of W. H. Auden’s poem Lay Your Sleeping Head. This original drawing is the product of a fortuitous crossing of Mark Tobey and the British artist Henry Moore during their time at Petersburg Press.
Mark Tobey, Untitled 1974
pen and ink surrounding text
20.25 x 13.25 in. / 51.5 x 33.7 cm
Drawing on W. H. Auden poem from Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs book and portfolio (1974). Condition: tape on verso, soft crease lower edge.
Mark Tobey spent time in 1931 at Dartington Hall in rural Devon, owned by Leonard Elmhirst and his wife Dorothy, who had invited Tobey to join their arts center. He was given a teaching studio in the gatehouse of the estate where he taught everyone from children to adults of every skill level. Tobey spent the better part of a decade there and it was at Dartington Hall that he met fellow resident Henry Moore and others such as Lucian Clement, Stephan Freud, and Piet Mondrian.
The two artists were eventually reunited at Petersburg Press in New York where they were both producing work. Tobey drew with ink on a proof of printed text (the first two verses of a W. H. Auden poem entitled Lay Your Sleeping Head) from Henry Moore’s book...
