This is an exceptionally large English mid-19th century Victorian Ironstone Platter decorated in a beautifully detailed Japanese Imari pattern. The enameling is sharp with deep coloration and the overlaid gold is in very good original condition. The platter is marked "Stone China" on the reverse. The platter is in very good overall condition with normal patination and very minimal losses to the painted decoration. There is a bit of wear to the underside of the rim which does not detract from the value of the platter. Platers of this size are very uncommon and desirable. This is a mid size ironstone pottery Platter made by Mason's Ironstone, of Lane Delph, Staffordshire, England, circa 1815.
The platter is well potted with canted corners and a notched rim.
The piece is richly hand - decorated with bold enamels of cobalt blue, burnt orange, mauve, green, salmon and yellow, all in different shades and possibly over an under-glaze blue printed outline. The pattern is called; Vase and Jardinière and is a rare pattern usually only found on Jugs and bowls. This pattern is shown and listed on page 106 of the book; A Guide to Mason's Patent Ironstone Patterns, published by the Mason's Collectors' Club.
The piece is hand enamelled and hand gilded in the free flowing manner indicative of the earliest pieces.
The base is well marked with the straight line impressed mark "MASONS PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA" which is recorded as being one of the earliest impressed factory marks indicating a date of circa 1813-1815 as ironstone was only produced by them from 1813, which is late George 111 period. I
