Masons Ironstone Oval Platter in Gold Pheasants Peony & Fern pattern, Ca 1820
About the Item
This is a very good hand painted Mason's ironstone oval Platter, in the Gold Pheasants, Peony & Fern pattern, dating to the late Georgian period circa 1820.
The piece is well potted with an oval shape having radial ribs, a wavy edge and two shaped side handles.
It is very well decorated in a rarely seen pattern called: Gold Pheasants, Peony and Fern, depicting a central peony & fern with a mazarine blue border having gold gilt pheasants, interspersed with other hand painted floral designs. The pattern is finely hand enamelled, over-glaze in bold colors of various shades including burnt orange, yellow, brown, blue, green, and pink, possibly over an under-glaze printed outline, with a darker mazarine blue on the outer border There is hand gold gilding to the pheasants and the side handles, with various gold highlights in the pattern.
The piece is unmarked to the base, as with many Mason's pieces of this period but it is definitely Mason's Ironstone, with this pattern illustrated in the book: A Guide to Masons Patent ironstone Patterns, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club , page 32.
Overall a very decorative Small Platter in a rare pattern and lovely condition for a piece about 200 years old.
