About the Item
This is a beautifully hand painted Large Dinner Plate in the rare Muscove Duck and Fence pattern by Mason's Ironstone, Lane Delph, England, dating to circa 1840.
This large Dinner Plate measures about 10.3 inches diameter and is well potted with a slightly ribbed side edge and moulded wavy rim.
The pattern is hand-painted and gilded over-glaze with typical bold enamels in one of Mason's Chinoiserie influenced designs called the "Muscove Duck & Fence" pattern, as illustrated on page 101 of a guide to Mason's patent ironstone patterns, circa 1813-1848, published by The Mason's Collectors' Club. The level of hand enamelling on this piece is excellent, with much additional hand gilding, all producing striking decoration on this rare pattern.
The base carries one of Mason's early printed marks with MASON'S above a rectangular sided crown and banner stating; Patent Ironstone China , dating this piece to circa 1830 to 1848, spanning the late Georgian through William 1Vth to early Victorian period.
Overall a rare and striking piece of Mason's Ironstone, in lovely condition, for use or display.

Often seen as ugly and black sheep of the porcelain world. British 1810-1820 Clobbered wares deserve better as they are historically very interesting. So lets call them George the IV or Regency Taste redecorated porcelain. And leave the clobbered behind us as it does no justice to what they are at all. Its not that because we live in a time were these super funky colours are out of taste that we should hate on these pieces.
A short history!
During the early 19th century, the Prince Regent (later King George IV) played a key role in cultivating a taste for the exotic Orient among the British elite, influencing interior design during the Regency era. His lavish projects, such as the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, epitomized this fascination. The Pavilion, with its blend of Indian, Chinese, and Gothic elements, became a symbol of the Prince’s extravagant taste. The interiors featured Chinese wallpaper, Indian textiles, and oriental furniture, reflecting the era’s growing interest in Chinoiserie and other oriental-inspired designs.
This trend extended to the decorative arts, where clobbered Chinese...
