Max Ackermann Prints and Multiples

German, 1887-1975
Max Ackermann was a seminal German abstract artist whose career spanned several key movements in 20th-century art. Known for his vibrant and dynamic compositions, Ackermann made significant contributions to the fields of prints and posters, blending elements of abstract expressionism with a distinct graphic sensibility. Born in Berlin in 1887, Ackermann showed an early interest in the arts. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Weimar under Henry van de Velde, a key figure in the Art Nouveau movement, and continued his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, where he was influenced by Adolf Hölzel, a pioneer of abstract art. Ackermann's formative years were marked by exposure to various avant-garde movements, which shaped his later works in both painting and printmaking. His prints and posters are held in the collections of institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), New York, and the Städel Museum, Frankfurt.
