Omega Jewelry

It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. But the universal love for vintage Omega watches isn't confined to astronomers, and there’s more to the company’s heritage than the story of the Moonwatch.

The house’s origins date to 1848, when Swiss watchmaker Louis Brandt first set up shop. His sons Louis-Paul and César took over after his death, and in 1894, the pair developed an intriguing new movement.

Not only was it highly accurate, but every part was replaceable, making it easy for any professional to service. The Brandts called their movement the Omega, and as its popularity spread, they changed their company’s name to that of its flagship product.

In 1917, the British Royal Flying Corps designated Omega as an official supplier, and during World War II it became the principal watch supplier for the British forces and their allies. These commissions further strengthened Omega’s commitment to ensuring its products’ reliability under extreme conditions. In 1948, it launched the versatile Seamaster. Developed as a dive watch, the Seamaster proved its durability at high altitudes and freezing temperatures, as well. (Here is the 1stDibs guide to spotting a fake Omega Seamaster.

Thanks in part to its rugged reputation and Omega’s links to the British military, it became James Bond’s watch of choice in 1995, appearing in GoldenEye and every succeeding Bond movie; it returned in 2021’s No Time to Die. Nevertheless, the most famous Omega by far is the Speedmaster, introduced in 1957. The first chronograph to display its tachymeter scale on the bezel instead of the dial for easier readability, it was quickly adopted by engineers and scientists.

Worn by Buzz Aldrin during the 1969 Apollo 11 lunar mission, it’s the only watch certified by NASA for extravehicular activity (space walks) — and, as far as we know, the only one approved by the Russian space agency, too.

Watch aficionados and aficionadas alike can find vintage Omega watches today on 1stDibs.

Omega Seamaster Reference 14363 Vintage Scarab Lugs Gold Top
By Omega
Located in New York, NY
Since its introduction in 1948, the Seamaster has been a pillar of the Omega brand. In the collection's 76-year history, Seamasters have been manufactured in many different iterations, from a versatile, everyday timepiece to a robust diver's tool in the Seamaster 300. Here, we have an earlier 1950s Seamaster with a special gold top case. The hooded and scarab lugs, to the crosshair gilt "no-lume" dial, these elements come together to create a truly differentiated look. The design elements of this watch are rare and make this watch highly collectible. Omega Seamaster 300 165024-64
By Omega
Located in London, GB
A real treasure and wonderful find, This Omega Seamaster 300 has been worn daily by its last 2 family owners up until the last few s years at which point it was locked away in a drawer. We have purposely done very little work to this watch but what we have done we will point out. It has an original black dial with original hands. Bezel may be slightly later from a service. Well worn in places with the case as you would expect showing lovingly worn marks and scratches. It appears to have never been polished with the plexiglass appearing original too. The dial has aged and naturally discoloured to give a real genuine vintage feel and look to this Seamaster. It looks to be a really honest example of what it is which is an early 60's Seamaster 300! Our watchmaker has been through to the watch to ensure it is working as well as it can be mechanically and is now reading +/- 9 seconds per day. We have made one or two changes out of necessity, the strap fitted to this watch is a new authentic, black with grey lines, Omega Nato...

The clean and functional watch, a considerable success for Omega, possessed a number of designed elements that made it stand out: An ellipse shape with recessed crown determined to be the best geometric shape for the wrist, determined after extensive study Unicoc case with hermetically sealed crystal water-resistant to a depth of 30m. Available with a stainless steel bracelet or easily interchangeable water-resistant Cor-fam straps According to an Omega advertisement at the time, "The shape of the Omega Dynamic was determined by the anatomy of your wrist; its dial by the workings of your eyes; it strap by the physiology of your skin." Today's offering showcases this first edition Dynamic in gorgeous all-original condition. The first generation of the watch lasted only from 1968 until 1970. Omega's top-tier caliber 565 movement, one of the last superior 500's series movements used before Omega began trying to reduce their costs, was the top-tier offering of the 500 series. It has 24 jewels and a quick-setting date and is arguably the finest mass-produced automatic movement from era. It is all-original and presents in gorgeous condition. Its case presents as mint. Omega watches are Swiss-made and very high quality. Generally, Omega fans would agree that the watches are worth the money. However, it is a personal choice.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022
Yes, Omega is a luxury watch. Generally, the term “luxury” refers to any product that is non-essential, aspirationally priced and crafted according to strict quality standards. Omega timepieces fit this definition. You can shop a collection of Omega watches on 1stDibs.

Which Omega is worth buying is totally subjective! The Brandts called their movement the Omega, and as its popularity spread, they changed their company's name to that of its flagship product. Since then, Omega has become well-known for its Speedmaster, Constellation and Deville watches, among others. When choosing which watch to purchase, consider where and when you'll wear it, what complications you need (if any), your budget and your tastes. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of Omega watches.

There is no definitive answer to the question of which is cheaper: Omega or Rolex. When comparing entry-level models, Omega's starting prices may be as low as half that of Rolex's, but limited edition watches produced by Omega may rival the price points of high-end Rolex watches. Both Swiss luxury watchmakers offer a wide range of models to suit different budgets, preferences and tastes. Find a diverse assortment of Omega and Rolex watches on 1stDibs.

No, Omega is not of higher quality than Rolex. These two luxury watch brands are universally heralded for all the distinctive timepieces they’ve brought to market. Rolex brings more than 100 years of history to watchmaking and is widely recognized for its commitment to precision and an unflagging pursuit of innovation. Omega watches are equally renowned for their precise, reliable performance, which has made its watches the timepieces of choice for the British military and NASA. When shopping for a watch, you should think about what you’re looking for in this type of accessory. You may wish to consider the power reserve, materials, accuracy, craftsmanship, where it was manufactured and more. If it’s your first watch, you may wish to consider whether or not you’d prefer a pre-owned model. Buying a new, never-worn watch enables you to build a history with it that isn’t shared by anyone else, but the greatest advantage to buying a pre-owned watch is that it opens up a wider range of models to consider, including rare ones that have been discontinued. Explore a large collection of watches on 1stDibs.

Yes, Omega is as good of quality as Rolex. These two luxury watch brands are universally heralded for all the distinctive timepieces they’ve brought to market. Rolex's enviable worldwide recognition can be credited to its commitment to precision and an unflagging pursuit of innovation. Over its more than 100-year history, Rolex has introduced many innovative timepieces, including the first truly waterproof watch, the Oyster. It’s a celebrated part of Omega lore that the brand’s Speedmaster Professional Chronograph was the first watch to make a lunar landing. Omega prioritizes quality and durability, creating watches that keep precise time even in the worst of conditions.
