Questions About Philippe Hiquily Furniture
- 1stDibs ExpertNovember 20, 2024Opinions differ as to which sculpture Donatello is best known for. One of his most famous pieces is a carved wood sculpture called The Penitent Magdalene, which is now in the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo in Florence, Italy. Another is a bronze sculpture entitled David. It is presently part of the Museo Nazionale del Bargello collection, also in Florence. Other notable sculptures by Donatello include Saint Mark, the equestrian statue of Gattamelata, Saint George, Zuccone and The Feast of Herod. Explore a diverse assortment of sculptures on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 27, 2025The Florentine sculptor who was famous for his lifelike sculptures is Donatello. He was born in Florence around 1386 and completed apprenticeships with multiple Florentine artisans and artists, including Lorenzo Ghiberti. Some of Donatello's best-known works include Penitent Magdalene, Saint George, David and Saint Mark. Shop a wide range of sculptures on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 24, 2024Here are some interesting facts about Donatello. Unlike many other Italian Renaissance artists, Donatello did not study for years as an apprentice under a master sculptor. His training was instead in goldsmithing and stonemasonry. To convey a sense of motion in his works, Donatello developed a spiraling pose known as "figura serpentinata." Donatello also diverged from his counterparts in his use of materials. While other artists of the time worked exclusively in marble and bronze, Donatello dabbled with wood as well, using it as the material of choice for some of his best-known works, such as The Penitent Magdalene. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of sculptures.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 19, 2025Antonio Canova's famous neoclassical sculpture is often cited as The Three Graces. The marble sculpture depicts the three daughters of Zeus from Greek mythology. After receiving a commission from an English collector, Canova worked on the piece from 1814 to 1817. It was actually his second treatment of the subject, the original sculpture having been made for Joséphine Bonaparte, the first wife of Napoleon. The work is now part of the collections of London's Victoria & Albert Museum. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Antonio Canova art.
