Pompeo Borra Art

1898-1973

Pompeo Borra is an Italian painter born in Milan in 1898. He began his artistic career attending the Brera Academy of Fine Arts. In 1916, he took part as a volunteer in the First World War. At the end of the conflict, he returned to his vocation for painting. In 1924, he took part in the Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte, Venice. In the same year, he met the group of founding artists of the Novecento movement and began to take part in the exhibitions. His paintings arouse the interest of Franz Roh, the famous theorist of magical realism and German New Objectivity, who invited him to the Italian art exhibition at the Kunstverein in Leipzig in 1928. His painting of severe purism proposes square images and compact volumes that evoke fourteenth-century painting, blocked and silent situations inhabited by everyday objects and dreamy and immobile characters, mostly female. In this decade he collaborated with Galleria Il Milione, often going to Paris where he became friends with Léonce Rosenberg, director of the Galerie de L'Effort Moderne. His chromatic choices evolve towards transparent and brighter shades, even crossing an abstract season. In the years 1949–50, he took part in the establishment of the important Marzocchi collection, sending a self-portrait, Compagni di lavoro, the Collection is today kept in the Pinacoteca Civica di Forlì. In the 50s and 60s painting, Pompeo Borra abandoned the solid and monumental volumes of the previous works, creating works in which he anticipates themes that have come back to life after his death and had a greater critical response in the 1980s with the term postmodern. The two-dimensionality, the intense color scheme and the extreme synthesis of the figures, always immersed in an atmosphere of metaphysical suspension, will be the connotative stylistic features of his later works. His works are preserved in important museums, institutions and private collections, including the Center Pompidou, Paris, Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Milan, Civic Gallery of Modena, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto, Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Milan, Museo del Novecento, Milan and Mario Rimoldi Modern Art Museum, Cortina d'Ampezzo. He died in Milan in 1973.

Barbra Stresiand "Belle of 14th Street" 1973 CBS TV Special 20th Century Litho Signed and numbered 10/150 in pencil, lower margin. Etching, 13.5” x 9.75”. Framed 21.25” x 17.25”. Pulled in 1975. Belle of 14th Street After two successful television shows on CBS, Barbra's manager, Marty Erlichman told the press, “We don't intend to go to the well once too often. The next special will have other performers. However, Barbra will never become just another hostess for just another musical variety show. Whatever we decide to do in the future shows, she will dominate in a unique fashion.” Barbra’s third television special for CBS and her sponsor, Monsanto, was titled The Belle of 14th Street . In February 1966, shortly after finishing up Color Me Barbra , Streisand and husband Elliott Gould took a second honeymoon in Paris. The trip was financed by her television corporate sponsor, Chemstrand. Barbra told the press, “I’m here to purchase the wardrobe for my next TV special. Cost is no object because my sponsor is picking up the tab.” At that point the theme of her third TV show would be fashion, and Paris offered many couture choices. Barbra was seen at a Dior fashion show wearing not the designer’s clothes, but a jaguar suit and hat she had designed herself. In all, it is said Barbra chose nine Dior outfits at a cost of $150,000. However, Barbra Streisand's third television special for CBS was postponed. In March 1966, Barbra flew to London to appear at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Funny Girl . Shortly after beginning her run in London, Barbra announced her pregnancy. Not only did that cause her concert tour to be abbreviated, but Barbra’s television special was postponed as well. Barbra told the BBC in July 1966: “I also can’t do my third television show, which I was supposed to do here [London].” Returning to the States, Barbra performed four concert dates, and then retired to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and give birth to her son, Jason, in December 1966. CBS and Chemstrand wanted a new special by the end of 1967, therefore production on the show picked up momentum in March 1967. (Barbra was due in Hollywood in May to begin shooting the Funny Girl film.) The format and theme of the television show had changed, too. Instead of centering on fashion, Barbra’s next special would be situated in a 1900’s Vaudeville theater. “We were all determined that the show not be just a variety format,” director Joe Layton said. “We wanted something different. So we hit upon the idea of restaging a vaudeville performance. All the acts, songs, skits and specialties had to be derivative of the period between 1895-1912.” Barbra’s creative collaborators did meticulous research on Vaudeville — “We even called George Burns in Hollywood and Jack Pearl,” said Barbra’s manager, Marty Erlichman. Entitled The Belle of 14th Street , the new special would allow Barbra to play several different characters but not have to shoulder the burden of carrying another one-woman show—this time Streisand would be accompanied by guest stars: Broadway actor Jason Robards; Vaudeville veteran John Bubbles; and Lee Allen...

Rufino Tamayo Untitled Composition from "Ediciones Poligrafa, Barcelona at Redfern Gallery, London" Original Color Lithograph Year: 1979 Edition: 1000 Size: 10 x 7.325 inches (25.4 × 18.61 cm) Unsigned and not individually numbered Publisher: La Poligrafa S.A., Barcelona, Spain Printer: La Poligrafa S.A., Barcelona, Spain Copy of the Imprint Page with Edition Number included Gallery-issued COA provided upon request *Could come framed in a simple white/black/natural frame made from composite wood with standard plex for an additional $48. See example images. Please inquire. Rufino Tamayo was among the internationally recognized artists featured in the Ediciones Polígrafa exhibition at the Redfern Gallery, London, held from December 4, 1979 to January 31, 1980. Organized in collaboration with the Barcelona-based publisher Polígrafa, the exhibition highlighted a broad spectrum of modern printmaking, bringing together leading figures whose graphic works expanded the boundaries of contemporary art. Tamayo’s contribution reflects his distinctive synthesis of Mexican cultural identity with international modernist language. Unlike many of his contemporaries in Mexican muralism, Tamayo favored a more universal and poetic visual vocabulary over overt political narrative. His prints—often executed as lithographs—are characterized by bold chromatic contrasts, textured surfaces, and simplified, almost cosmic figuration. Themes such as humanity, mythology, celestial bodies, and existential reflection recur throughout his work, conveyed through a restrained yet powerful formal language. Within the context of the Polígrafa exhibition, Tamayo’s prints underscored the global dialogue between tradition and modernity, situating his work alongside that of artists such as Joan Miró, Antoni Tàpies, and Eduardo Chillida. His inclusion reaffirmed his position as one of the most significant Latin American artists of the 20th century and a key figure in the evolution of modern printmaking. Rufino Tamayo lithograph...
