Salvador Dalí Seating

Spanish, 1904-1989

Instantly recognizable by his waxed, upturned mustache, the flamboyant Salvador Dalí is one of modern art’s most distinctive figures. He is also one of the icons of the 20th-century avant-garde Surrealist movement, whose dreamlike images, drawn from the depths of the unconscious, he deployed in paintings, sculptures, prints and fashion, as well as in film collaborations with Luis Buñuel and Alfred Hitchcock.

Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, and even as a youngster, displayed the sensitivity, sharp perception and vivid imagination that would later define his artworks. In these, he conjured childhood memories and employed religious symbols and Freudian imagery like staircases, keys and dripping candles to create unexpected, often shocking pieces.

Dalí's use of hyperrealism in conveying Surrealist symbols and concepts that subvert accepted notions of reality is epitomized in what is perhaps his most recognizable painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), in which he depicts the fluidity of time through melting clocks, their forms inspired by Camembert cheese melting in the sun. His artistic genius, eccentric personality and eternal quest for fame made him a global celebrity.

“Each morning when I awake, I experience again a supreme pleasure,” he once said. “That of being Salvador Dalí.”

Armchair model "Leda" Structure in polished cast brass varnish. Salvador Dali Taken from “Femme à tête de roses" (1935)” 1935 (Woman with a head of roses). It was sufficient for this sculpture to be made as a three dimensional piece, remaining faithful to every detail in Dalí’s painting. Dalí affirmed: “A chair can be used even to sit on, but only on one condition: That we sit uncomfortably.” We can sit on the Leda, but due to the fact that it only has three legs and that the chair is heavy, it being made of solid brass, is more a work of art than a functional piece of furniture. © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Figueres, 2022 Artworks by Salvador Dalí: © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, VEGAP, Barcelona, 2022 Salvador Dalí is the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century and the most famous Surrealist. Though chiefly remembered for his painterly output, in the course of his long career he successfully turned to sculpture, printmaking, fashion, advertising, writing, filmmaking and design. Born in Figueres, Catalonia, Dalí received his formal education in fine arts in Madrid. He moved closer to Surrealism in the late 1920s and joined the Surrealist group in 1929, soon becoming one of its leading exponents. In the Paris of the 1930s, Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends working in the application of art to a number of varied disciplines, beyond the study of purely pictorial art. One of these, Jean-Michel Frank, an acclaimed furniture designer and decorator in Paris at that time, got on extremely well with Dalí, and together they developed a number of ideas. One example of this is the Bracelli lamp, a classic design in Jean-Michel’s manner of designing and working that Dalí adopted for his home in Portlligat. Among Dalí’s projects, which add to his CV as a designer, are the garden furniture for his home in Portlligat, the complete architecture of the Night Club (in the shape of a hedgehog) for the Hotel Presidente in Acapulco (1957) and a project for a bar in California in the 1940s. His creations were not limited to traditional furniture elements, but included taps, handles, knobs, prints and objects of indeterminate use. In 1933, Dalí even registered the patent for the design of a bench as an outdoor seat. Dalí’s creativity and fascination with the human body takes the form of a sunbed, intimately created and exquisitely designed. Dalí’s original Portlligat was made in 1962 from olive tree wood for him and his wife Gala’s home in Costa Brava, Spain. This reproduction is available in Iroko wood which is resistant to changes in heat and moisture content, and optional upholstery for outdoor use. It resembles a body: it has a head, torso, ribs, arms, hands, legs and feet. The visible grain and unified structure present a strong and meaningfully arranged, figurative piece. Salvador Dalí was born in Figueres, Catalonia, in 1904. He began drawing when he was 12 and was formally educated in fine arts at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, Madrid. He experimented with Cubism, was attracted to Dada and Futurism, and was influenced by the great masters of the Renaissance. In 1929, he joined the Surrealist movement and became its most successful proponent. His work shocked and excited society. Diverse things were merged into an explicit rawness, one with unusual meanings that, when combined, made irreality concrete. In the Paris of the 1930s, Dalí surrounded himself with a circle of friends working in varied disciplines beyond the study of purely pictorial art. He collaborated with designers like JeanMichel Frank to...

Ruben Nakian Bronze Figurine "Leda and the Swan" Limited Edition

By Reuben Nakian

Located in Bloomfield Hills, MI

SALE ONE WEEK ONLY “Leda and the Swan” is by Reuben Nakian (1897 - 1986). He was an American sculptor and teacher of Armenian extraction. His works’ recurring themes are from Greek and Roman mythology. Nakian’s small bronzes achieve majesty and power which are not dependent on size and amplitude. With characteristic freshness, he has reinterpreted the classical subject of Leda and the Swan refining it in the Classical-Renaissance-Baroque tradition in a contemporary way. Dr. Robert P. Metzger gives us his aesthetic interpretation of this work which retells the myth in classical hedonism and freedom of expression showing Leda and the Swann prior to her being ravaged and during their first meeting. “The young virgin is fascinated with her new found friend and accepts him in a spirit of playfulness, contentment and wonder. She is dreamily available and shyly seductive as the deceptively tame swan snuggles up to her with its phallic-like neck.” Leda appears composed, placid yet open and available as compared to her more intense and passionate states in other of Nakian’s depictions on the same theme. This was cast at the "Renaissance Art Foundry" in 1978 and is so marked on the base being #5 of 7. It is believed that “no other sculptor of the twentieth century matched Rueben’s heroic renditions with the grand themes of Western Art. His erotic mythological figures exude a joyous energy of gesture and movement which place them among seminal sculptural achievements of the past one hundred years.” Nakian studied at the Independent School of Art in New York City previously known as the Robert Henri School … with Homer Boss...

Yes, Salvador Dali did create jewelry. Dali liked to explore different art mediums and jewelry definitely caught his fancy at one point in his life. His jewelry pieces were works of art in themselves and not mass produced—it was more like wearable miniature art. On 1stDibs, find a variety of original artwork from top artists.
