SEM Art

Italian, 1863-1934

Furniture brand SEM started as a spin-off from Milanese brand Spotti and now has an exceptional reputation of its own. Working with acclaimed furniture designers, including Valentina Cameranesi Sgroi, Vormen and Elisa Ossino, SEM creates personalized and finely crafted solutions for modern living.

During the 1950s, large furniture manufacturers often had difficulty providing customized, high-quality furniture while producing other products on a mass scale. SEM originated from that demand and has evolved to complement Spotti and offer simple, functional and highly ergonomic furniture for both work and home environments.

SEM, which stands for Spotti Edizioni Milano, has attracted a wide range of talent to design its furniture collections. Pivot, named for a hingeless door mechanism in its cupboards, is a design by Giacomo Moor, named as Elle Decor Italia’s Best Young Designer of 2016. Futuraforma, designed by architecture and interior design team Marcante-Testa, is a sophisticated collection featuring the Duale table, the Genio chandelier and the Magico carpet.

Italian architect Hannes Peer lent his expertise to the Paesaggio collection, which features notable designs like the Nuvola armchair, the Alea dining chair, the Petali table lamp and the Butterfly table. Peer’s Butterfly console tables and other tables are a meeting between architecture, design and engineering to produce a complex and organic form that catches the eye.

SEM displayed collections at Milan Design Week in 2018 and 2019 and with AD France’s AD Intérieurs in 2019. SEM also expanded the Paesaggio collection during the 2021 FuoriSalone, Alcova, in Milan.

Mother and Children

By Edna Hibel

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork "Mother and Children" c.1970, is a colors lithograph on paper by American artist Edna Hibel, 1917-2014. It is signed and numbered II 3/10 Ed. 200 in pencil by the artist. The The artwork (sheet ) size is 34 x 23 inches, framed size is 40 x 29 inches. Custom framed in original wooden decorated grey/silver frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: Edna Hibel, a painter of sentimental pictures of children, has had a more than 60-year career as painter and lithographer and promoter of peace through exhibitions of her artwork. She was born in 1917 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Abraham and Lena Hibel, and she was raised in the Boston area and educated at Brookline High School where she met her future husband, Theodore Plotkin. She began to paint when she was nine years old and learned watercolor during summers at the shore where her family vacationed in Maine and Hull, Massachusetts. Hibel studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Arts, from 1935-39, receiving a Sturtevant Traveling Fellowship to Mexico. In Boston, in 1966, she began lithography, continuing in 1970 in Zurich, where she still works every year. She has created lithographic works with up to 32 stones (or colors) on paper, silk, wood veneer and porcelain. The latter pieces are called lithographs on porcelain and result from a complicated process, that she keeps a secret, whereby she transfers stone lithographic color separations onto Bavarian hard paste porcelain. Hibel has created the "Arte Ovale" series and various plaques with this technique. She organized the Edna Hibel Museum of Art, in Jupiter, Florida, to display and promote her work and also created a United Nations stamp, "Mother Earth." In 1995, she was commissioned by the Foundation of the U.S. National Archives to commemorate the 75th anniversary of women receiving the universal right to vote. At the ceremony, Ms. Lucy Baines Johnson referred to Hibel as the "Heart and Conscience of America." In November, 2001, the World Cultural Council based in Mexico City gave her the Leonardo da Vinci World Award of Arts. Hibel's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in more than 20 countries including Russia, Brazil, China, Costa Rica, and the United States, and under the royal patronage of Count and Countess Bernadotte of Germany, Count Thor Bonde of Sweden, Prince and the late Princess Rainier of Monaco and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England. Pope John Paul II gave her a medal of honor as did the late Belgian King Baudouin. She also received honorary Doctoral degrees including from Eureka College, and Northwood University of Florida, Michigan and Texas. She also has received many humanitarian honors for her charitable efforts for children's and medical charities. Her exhibitions "Golden Bridge" and " Peace Through Wisdom" were efforts to promote peace and cultural understanding between China, the United States, Yugoslavia and Russia, and a television documentary titled "Hibel's Russian Palette" was based on her trips and art shows in Leningrad, now St. Petersburg. In 2001, Edna received a Lifetime Achievement Award from "Women in the Visual Arts," an organization of artists in the South Florida area. Little Chinese Girl

By Ming Wai

Located in San Francisco, CA

This artwork "Little Chinese Girl" 1982 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed an inscribed A.C (Hors Commerce) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 24.5 x 22 inches, sheet size is 28 x 24.5 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Original advertising poster for Maxim's Paris restaurant by Sem

By SEM

Located in PARIS, FR

The original advertising poster for Maxim's Paris restaurant by Sem captures the glamour and joie de vivre of early 20th-century Parisian nightlife. Maxim's, renowned as one of Paris' most iconic dining establishments, was a hub of high society, attracting the elite, artists, and celebrities of the Belle Époque. Sem, a celebrated caricaturist and illustrator of the period, skillfully portrayed the lively, opulent atmosphere that defined the restaurant’s reputation. The illustration encapsulates the essence of Maxim's as a symbol of luxury and sophistication. Known for its Art Nouveau interiors and extravagant soirées, Maxim's offered more than just a meal; it was a cultural experience that reflected the Parisian ideal of elegance and decadence. The clientele depicted in Sem's work reflects a mix of aristocracy, bourgeoisie, and bohemian characters, each enjoying the ambiance that made Maxim's a legend in its time. Sem (pseudonym for Georges Goursat) was celebrated for his keen eye and humorous exaggerations in capturing the essence of Parisian society. His work transcended simple illustration, blending wit with artistry to immortalize the vibrancy of the Belle Époque. This poster is no exception, serving not only as an advertisement but also as a cultural artifact that offers a window into the social dynamics of early 20th-century Paris. Maxim's, established in 1893, became synonymous with luxury dining and entertainment...
