Simone Crestani Case Pieces and Storage Cabinets

Italian, b. 1984

Artist, designer and glass virtuoso Simone Crestani is a luminary in the world of glass art, combining time-honored tradition with innovative glassblowing techniques to create exquisite sculptures, vessels and modern objets d’art.

Born in 1984 in Marostica, near Venice, Crestani began working with glass at age 15 as an apprentice at the Massimo Lunardon glass factory. Following a 10-year apprenticeship, Crestani opened his atelier and studio in Camisano Vicentino in northern Italy in 2010.

Dedicated to research and exploring new glassblowing methods, Crestani has moved away from working with traditional Murano glass to borosilicate glass, using a specialized flameworking technique he calls “hollow sculpture.”

By using borosilicate glass, which is nearly unbreakable, Crestani can shape and mold his pieces with extraordinary detail. Nature inspires many of his works, such as his Serpentine barware, bird decanters, octopus-inspired Polpo pitchers, antler-topped Africa Trophy bottles, molecular Alchemica glassware line and beautiful candelabras adorned with roses. Other notable Crestani creations include his luminous E-Sumi wall sconces and table lamps, influenced by traditional Japanese sumi-e paintings.

Crestani has collaborated with leading designers such as Giordano Viganò, with whom he made several sculptural wood and glass tables, and Italian glass expert Roberto Giulio Rida for Bernd Goeckler Antiques’ Duetto collection. Among its pieces are the bonsai-like Avatar chandelier and the Scarabei mirror, with glass scarabs embedded in its circular frame.

Since 2006, Crestani’s works have been shown in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including PAD Paris, the Venice Biennale and Salon Art + Design in New York.

Cabinet Ollo Model by A. Mendini and A. Guerriero for Alchimia, Italy
By Gruppo Alchimia
Located in Milan, Italy
Cabinet Ollo Collection, glossy polyester lacquered wood panels, glossy white and black lacquered top and bottom discs, matte black lacquered interior, crystal shelves. Publication: A. Mendini e A. Guerriero, "Collezione Ollo", Catalogo Museo Alchimia 1988; Raffaella Poletti, Atelier Mendini "Una utopia visiva", Fabbri Editori 1992. Biography In 1976 Alessandro and Adriana Guerriero established Alchimia, the first example of manufacturing designers in Milan. In 1978 and 1979 they presented the Bau haus and Bau haus II collections. Lamps, armchairs, chairs, tables, cabinets, and so on. Artists involved: Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Bruno and Giorgio Gregori, Michele De Lucchi, Andrea Branzi, UFO, Paola Navone, Daniela Puppa, Franco Raggi. The prevalent decorative material is laminated plastic. Alchimia’s culture, which is against the Italian design (Casabella magazine) changes the base of all previous design theories, resulting in a profound and radical change in the mindset of architects. Visual Alphabets, Redesign, Trivial Design, Cosmetics and Sentimental Robot are the slogans underlying the exuberant and vast production of Alchimia city. In the theoretical manifesto of the group, Alessandro Mendini writes “Alchimia is not interested in disciplines because they are considered to be within their rules. Indeed, it is important to look into the existing large free spaces between them. Alchimia weighs the assumption that conception and confused production methods should coexist where craftsmanship, manufacturing, information technology, techniques and current and obsolete materials can get mixed up. “They are handcrafted objects, recycled, mass, improbable, provocative, Kitsch, all very theory-laden. It operates and experiences in many sectors: the Pensione Ideale (Franco Raggi), the Copertine di Domus (Occhiomagico), the Abito Sonoro and the performance of Persone Dipinte (Anna Gili), the Stilismo della Moda (Cinzia Ruggeri...

Buffet Cabinet by Ferruccio Laviani for Fratelli Boffi, Italy
By Fratelli Boffi, Ferruccio Laviani
Located in Milan, Italy
Sophisticated style exercises are immediately recognized in the container furniture made of a hand-carved base and finished in aged golden leaf. The floral decorations, curls and shells immediately recall the stylistic features of the Baroque, but the greatness of these wooden curves contrasts instead with the geometry of the upper unit. Hand-carved Baroque base in antique gold is contrasted with the rigorous geometry of the top covered in a colored mirror on which an eccentric handle is placed in the form of a gecko. As usual, nothing is left to chance and when this magic coffer opens, the shelves are in glass while the interior of the doors is covered with bronze or golden mirrors: a harmonious patchwork of materials, shapes and styles that coexist in a single object. Biography Born in Cremona in 1960 Laviani attends the Istituto Professionale Internazionale per l’Artigianato Liutario e del Legno di Cremona, receiving his degree in 1978. He later attends the Faculty of Architecture, at the Politecnico di Milano where he graduates in 1986, while attending at the same time the Scuola Politecnica di Design in Milan from 1982 to 1984. In 1983 he starts working for Michele De Lucchi; he becomes a partner in 1986 and works there until 1991, when he decides to open his own studio in Milan. Laviani’s work mainly focuses on product design, interior design, art direction and graphics. Since 1991, he is the Art Director for Kartell; same role he has played for other companies such as Flos, De Padova, Foscarini, Moroso, Society (Limonta), Emmemobili. He designs retail spaces, set-ups, offices and houses for private clients, as well as, furniture amoung his clients are brands like Cassina, Dolce e Gabbana, Dada – Molteni & C., Barovier & Toso, Piper- Heidsieck, Missoni, Citroen, Hansgrohe, Martini e Rossi, Swarovski, Veuve Cliquot, Moët Hennessy, Marazzi Group, La Rinascente, Piombo, Ermenegildo Zegna, Paula Cademartori, Renault, Zuhair Murad, Haworth, Emilio Pucci, Zara, Habitat, Society (Limonta), Pasticceria Cova, Samsung. In 2008 an exhibition was dedicated to the lamps he designed for Kartell, and was set up at Metropol Dolce & Gabbana space...
