Industrial Furniture

INDUSTRIAL STYLE

Industrial floor lamps, bar stools, desks and other industrial-style furnishings have experienced a resurgence in popularity with the rise of interest in minimalist design.

It's a look that celebrates the past even as it suggests vigor, productivity and brawn. The newly chic industrial style of decor repurposes the simple, sturdy furniture of an earlier world of commerce — brushed-metal storage cabinets and display shelves, task lamps and pendant lights with enameled shades, work tables with worn wooden tops and cast-iron bases — and couples them with aesthetic touches emblematic of energy and optimism, from bright upholstery fabrics to flowers.

The rise in prominence of the industrial style has come hand-in-hand with the residential repurposing of former manufacturing and warehouse districts throughout the United States, Canada and Europe. In many loft apartments created in shuttered factories, the architectural envelope has been left intact.

Industrial-style interiors feature elements like raw brick walls, exposed steel beams and oak floors whose history is written in every pit and gouge. Iron and glass transom windows give definition and interest to small kitchen areas anchored by kitchen islands made of marble, steel and brass, while taxidermy or vintage neon signs serve as wall art in living rooms dotted with leather club chairs. Patina is the keynote to a decor in sync with such surroundings.

On 1stDibs you will find industrial furniture designs that wear their age beautifully — and were built to last.

Antique Industrial Storage Locker, France ca. 1910
Antique Industrial Storage Locker, France ca. 1910

Antique Industrial Storage Locker, France ca. 1910

Located in Meulebeke, BE

A striking survivor of early 20th‑century French industrial design, this 1910 metal storage locker. It embodies the raw utility, honest construction, and tactile patina that define the golden age of European workshop furniture. Built for durability rather than ornament, it now stands as a sculptural object whose presence is shaped by more than a century of use, wear, and atmospheric aging. The locker’s tall, narrow proportions and vented doors reflect the functional needs of factories, ateliers, and railway depots in the years before the First World War. Each compartment was designed to store work garments, tools, or personal belongings, with ventilation panels ensuring airflow in bustling industrial environments. The metal surface has developed a richly textured patina; oxidation, softened edges, and traces of its original finish, creating a depth of character that cannot be replicated. This weathering transforms the piece from a utilitarian object into a compelling artifact of labor history. Inside, the compartments retain their original structure, offering a glimpse into the practical logic of early industrial storage. The open shelves, metal bases, and simple latching mechanisms speak to a time when furniture was engineered for endurance and clarity of purpose. Today, the locker’s raw, architectural silhouette makes it an ideal statement piece in contemporary interiors, where its rugged authenticity contrasts beautifully with clean lines and modern materials. Whether used as a functional storage unit, a sculptural accent, or a conversation piece in a loft, studio, or retail space, this antique French locker...
