Donald Judd Furniture

American, 1928-1994

Many consider Donald Judd one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Three decades after death, his ideas still hold a strong influence in the fields of architecture, interior design, criticism and art.

Judd was the voice of minimalism, rejecting through his art expressions of metaphysical and metaphorical symbolism. He sought to convey the literal, physical characteristics of each project he worked on. Judd's fascination with hard-edged imagery — especially squares and boxes — is prevalent through many of his sculptures, prints and paintings, and perfectly expresses his pragmatic artistic vision.

Even though he was a minimalist in practice, Judd appreciated various forms and styles of art, with a special fondness for Abstract Expressionism. He spent many years writing as an art critic and spoke extensively on behalf of artist culture.

Born in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, Judd joined the U.S. Army in 1946 and served in Korea until 1947. After returning home, he attended Columbia University, where he studied art history and philosophy while concurrently painting at the Art Students League.

Judd continued to paint until the early 1960s, when he abandoned the practice entirely in favor of sculpture. He found painting to be too illusionary and preferred the tactility of working in three dimensions.

As a strong proponent for art permanency, Judd purchased and refurbished many properties in Manhattan from the 1970s to the 1990s — primarily for the purpose of providing space to permanently hold and display his work and that of his colleagues. He obtained buildings throughout the downtown Cast Iron District. Other artists with the means to do so followed suit and helped develop the area, which is now known as SoHo — world-famous for cultivating artistic culture. Judd headed other political actions aimed at fostering artistic community and maintaining a healthy environment throughout New York City, especially in Manhattan.

In 1981, Judd moved with his wife, Julie Finch, to Marfa, Texas, where they established the Chinati Foundation. The 340-acre foundation site holds many of his own permanent installations and those of a number of his contemporaries, including American artists Dan Flavin, Carl Andre and John Wesley, as well as Russian artist Ilya Kabakov and many others.

Judd died from lymphoma in 1994, but a magnificent body of his work remains for all to relish for generations to come.

Bang & Olufsen BeoSound 9000 6-CD Tuner Hi-fi System 1990s by David Lewis
By Bang & Olufsen, David Lewis
Located in Montecatini Terme, IT
Hi-fi system BeoSound 9000 6-CD/Tuner with two loudspeakers (Beolab 1). The BeoSound 900 can be placed either vertically (mounted on it own support or directly on the wall) or horizontally. The CD's are easily loaded and held by spring suspended jaws, discs not in play can be replaced without interrupting the playback. The auto-positioning feature ensures that CDs are always returned to the position in which they were first placed. The Glass-covered aluminum plate holds the CDs and the rails for the CD carriage, while a backlit acrylic plate illuminates the CD currently playng. BeoSound 9000 offrs unprecedents flexibility to ensure the same uniform movement of the glass cover regardless of the placement of the BeoSound 900 vertically or horizontally, upright or flat. To counteract the effect of the gravity, a digital time control constantly monitors the movements of the cover and adjust the motor, keeping the complete movement wiithin 3,5 and 4 seconds. Such an abundance of fast moving mechanics means that special measures have been taken to ensure that BeoSound 9000 is safe to operate. Small prismatic lenses are placed at each end of the aluminium frame, controlling an infrared beam across the front of BeoSound 9000. If the beam is violated, the CD clamper will stop immediately. If the glass door is lifted while the clamper is in motion, it will decelerate immediately. A power failure feature ensures that the clamper is not damaged in a gravitational free-fall, if BeoSound 9000 is mounted vertically. Ingenious engineering solutions and intricate mechanical movements in a product that continues to surprise and delight users today – and all this from the inspiration of old vinyl records spinning on the record player’s turntable...

The print measures 16 x 16 inches. The frame is 23 ½ x 23 ½ inches. It is numbered lower left as AP5 - Artist Proof #5 and is pencil signed and dated ‘74 lower right. After his graduation in 1946 he served in the military at an American Navy base in Japan. Returning to America following his military service in 1950, Karhu enrolled at the Minneapolis School of Art but quit two years later to pursue missionary work as a Lutheran minister. Karhu left the missionary work in 1958 and chose to move his new family to Gifu City, a small provincial town northwest of Kyoto, Japan where he set about returning to his art. Karhu soon found local success in 1961; obtaining first prize at the Chubu Taiheijo Bijutsu Kyokai Ten (The Middle Pacific Art Group Exhibition) and fixing his first single, professional exhibition at the Shin...

Donald Judd Daybed Sofa with Custom Brazilian Cowhide Mattress
By Donald Judd
Located in SAINT LOUIS, MO
Donald Judd, one of the most significant artists of the 20th century, was well-known for his large-scale Minimalist works as well as his association with the desert town of Marfa, Texas. He was a master of scale and detail, space and volume. In his later years, he began designing furniture like his Minimalist sculptures. The Donald Judd daybed, first designed in 1978, is one of his most famous furniture works. This model, constructed of absolutely breathtaking Douglas Fir, was manufactured in 2003 by Wood and Plywood Furniture. Our designers chose ivory-hued Brazilian cowhide as the material on the twin-sized mattress. The 7" thick mattress is filled with a luxury foam base topped sink-into down feathers. It's the coolest piece of furniture we've ever had in our studio. "In the early 1970s, Donald Judd began to design furniture for 101 Spring Street in New York. His first designs were a wood bed and metal sinks...

Questions About Donald Judd Furniture
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 5, 2023
Donald Judd was inspired by manufacturing and industry. He was primarily interested in working with industrial materials, and the geometric structures that his fabricators made — he called them “stacks” and “progressions.” They were intended to be installed on the floor, hung from the ceiling or attached to the wall. His choice to remove the “handmade” part of his work was deliberate, as were the materials and the forms with which he worked. This spoke to Judd’s examination of space as well as the use of space, and the room-sized installations that followed for the artist in the years to come were grounded in the same ideas. On 1stDibs, find a selection of Donald Judd art and furniture.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Donald Judd first entered the art world publicly as a critic and while writing, he moved away from abstract painting into linear sculptures. His very linear approach helped him become a pioneer of the mid-20th-century Minimalism. He embraced three-dimensional work while simultaneously disavowing the term Minimalist.
