Pair of candlesticks. Bronze (blued and gilt). France, circa 1800.

Located in Madrid, ES

Pair of candlesticks. Bronze (blued and gilt). France, circa 1800. A pair of six-light bronze candelabras, a type often called "tripod" due to their shape. A base with three projections, placed on inverted truncated pyramidal architectural elements and with reliefs and medallions on the exterior faces, serves as the base for three seated sphinxes made of burnished bronze with gilded tails. From their backs, three upward-facing rods emerge, each ending in children's heads with butterfly wings. These sphinxes are decorated with raised candelabras secured by an openwork band (note the spiraling bouquet inside). From the heads, a circular shape with projections emerges, on which the actual shaft of the candelabra rests, topped with a pomegranate on a floral arrangement. The arms of the candelabras, ending in lighters, feature delicate scrolls and rooster heads. Note the varying textures of the material and the great amount of detail present in the architectural, vegetal, and figurative elements. The design of these vase shaped candlesticks was enormously successful, and numerous variants with slight modifications were subsequently created, including sphinxes and goat heads. On April 16, 1787, François Rémond (c. 1747–1812) supplied Daguerre with eight “girandoles en trepied” (as they were often known in literature), identified by some experts as the eight candlesticks of this model purchased from Daguerre by George, Prince of Wales, later King George IV, for Carlton House. The largest, ten-light model with a vase and rooster heads, was created around 1786. A pair of this model is recorded in the 1836 Inventory of the Legendre de Lucay collection, and another pair is known to have been commissioned for Marie Antoinette's Salon des Nobles at Versailles. Compare this example with the griffin chandelier...

Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie Marble, Gilt and Patinated Bronze Clock Set

By Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie

Located in London, GB

This fine clock set is crafted in patinated bronze, red marble and ornamented throughout with exquisite ormolu. It is the work of Lemerle-Charpentier & Cie, a French company highly celebrated for their superlative clock sets and garnitures. The set comprises a central clock and a pair of flanking candelabra. The clock is set on an oval plinth of red marble with ormolu feet. To the front of the plinth is set a relief panel in patinated bronze. Upon the plinth is set a fluted column of patinated bronze with ormolu flowers and banding, surmounted by an ormolu urn. The circular clock dial is set to the front of the column, with a face of red marble and Roman numerals in ormolu. Next to the clock face column stands the full length figure of the Greek goddess of hunting, Diana, holding a torch cast in patinated bronze. The pair of flanking candelabra are set on square plinths of red marble with canted angles and ormolu feet. Atop this are set fluted columns of patinated bronze, and an ovoid urn with relief panels with reliefs of classical figures on the main body and twin ormolu handles. Atop the urns are set candelabra...

Antique French Bronze and Marble Egyptian Revival Ibis Candelabras, 19th Century
Antique French Bronze and Marble Egyptian Revival Ibis Candelabras, 19th Century

Antique French Bronze and Marble Egyptian Revival Ibis Candelabras, 19th Century

Located in Dallas, TX

Inspired by Napoleon’s late-18th-century expedition to the Middle East, French artisans and menuisiers began incorporating motifs from antiquity into their creations. This pair of 19th-century bronze and marble candelabras perfectly epitomizes the resulting ‘Egyptian Revival’ style, seamlessly marrying masterful French craftsmanship with ancient aesthetics. Perhaps the most prominent Egyptian theme is the two golden ibis (symbolizing wisdom and communication) facing outwards that support the leaf cup bobeches. One cup rests on top of each creature’s head, while a third candle holder is positioned moderately above, between the birds’ wings. An ankh, which translates to “life”, hangs beneath the center bobeche, while each bird also clutches another Egyptian cross in one of its talons. The other claw perches on the rim of a tall urn with rosette-centric handles and a cluster of palmettes emerging from the interior. Geometric motifs and foliage further embellish the urn, which stands atop a classical plinth set on a pyramid-shaped base of black marble. The stone has been incised with golden pseudo-hieroglyphics and thin cartouche borders. A golden cobra, known as Uræus, with a floret on its head, hugs each side of the marble, rising to flank the urn’s plinth. Uræus was reserved for Egyptian royalty, with the pharaohs wearing an image of the snake on their heads as a rite of protection. Initially intended to serve as illumination in a formal French room, our pair of Egyptian Revival candelabras...

Vintage, New and Antique Candle Holders

For centuries, candles have been used in religious ceremonies such as Hanukkah, provided light to work or read by and more. During meals, the soft glimmer of candles adds warmth to a dinner table that no lighting solution could possibly imitate. With the right antique or vintage candleholder, candles can elevate a table setting or just help support your efforts to create a romantic atmosphere in any room.

When you combine the distinctive glow of a candle with a candleholder that matches the color scheme and decor you’ve painstakingly put together, the result can feel like magic. Finding the candleholder that best meets your needs can be daunting because you’re essentially bringing a piece into your home that is as important as the candle itself. Unsurprisingly, venturesome designers over the years have crafted innumerable alternatives to the traditional form of candleholders, and today a broad array of these decorative objects can be found on 1stDibs, whether they’re 19th-century candleholders made of silver or sleek mid-century modern glass candleholders for an understated accent to your dining area.

Try a tabletop orb candleholder from Lynne Meade Ceramics for a distinctive interpretation of this long-loved furnishing. An alluring pair of Georg Jensen stainless-steel candleholders, featuring pronounced organic curves, or Art Nouveau–informed natural-world motifs, on the other hand, can bring a dose of sculptural elegance to your living room.

If you’re more inclined to opt for antique or vintage pieces, find a collection that includes everything from simple wood taper candleholders to elaborate candelabras of gilt bronze or cut glass on 1stDibs now.
