Victorian English Sterling Silver Taper Candle Holders
By William Moulson
Located in Jesmond, Newcastle Upon Tyne
An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English cast sterling silver taper candlesticks; an addition of our ornamental silverware collection These exceptional antique Victorian cast sterling silver taper candlesticks have a plain classical English form. The cylindrical capitals are encircled with bands of tooled decoration and retain the original hallmarked detachable push fit sconces. The waisted section of each column features a plain panelled quatrefoil shaped knop. These Victorian taper candlesticks have quatrefoil shaped stepped bases with central plain sunken wells. Each taper candlestick does not have a weighted base. Condition These solid silver taper candlesticks are an exceptional gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of each base and full hallmarks to the sleeve of each sconce are all very clear; the full hallmarks to the base of one candlestick has wear in keeping with age, but remains clear and legible. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these antique solid...

Egyptian Motif Pair of Regency Candleholders by George Penton English circa 1808
By George Penton
Located in Incline Village, NV
Rare pair of Regency bronze candleholders from the London, England workshop of George Penton on New Street Fetter Lane. He was well known and recognized by both British and American connoisseurs of fine art during the late 18th and early 19th century. These Regency candleholders are marked and embossed "Published by G. Penton Jan.Y 1 1808". The Egyptian motif, the sphinx like figures, and recumbent lion at the base, all indicate that Penton was most certainly influenced by Thomas Hope and his 1807 publication "Household Furniture and Interior Decoration". The ornate and detailed appointments; from the multiple medallions adorning the candle cups, rope and tassel design to the drip holders, to the fine quality representation of the sphinx, lion, and mask on the base, with floral leaf pattern to the perimeter, all are emblematic of fine quality Regency period household decorations. These are a unique and beautiful pair of Regency candleholders from an important maker and an impressive collection (see provenance below). Perfect for the discerning collector of 18th and 19th century antiques. The condition is outstanding and all original with no restoration. Dimensions: 10 3/4" high x 3" wide x 4 1/2" deep George Penton's work can also be found at St. Michaels Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina where a brass chandelier with provisions for holding 45 candles still hangs. It is the oldest of these types of church chandeliers in America, and is referenced in an article in a May 18th, 1907 issue of The Atheneum. It was installed in 1804; information regarding this can also be found in "Written Historic and Descriptive Data, South Carolina, St. Michael's Church" prepared June 27th, 1941. Provenance: The Millicent A. Rogers Collection (See underside of candle holder image): Millicent Rogers (1902-1953). Noted Socialite, Fashion Icon, and Art Collector. Standard Oil Heiress and granddaughter to Henry Rogers...

Pair 18th C. English Matthew Boulton Ormolu Mounted Carrara Marble Cassolettes
By Matthew Boulton and John Fothergill
Located in New York, NY
A Magnificent, Exceptionally Rare, Museum Quality Pair of 18th Century English Ormolu Mounted, Hand-Carved and Hand-Polished Carrara Marble Cassolettes, By Matthew Boulton. These beautiful ormolu-mounted white marble cassolettes are by Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) and John Fothergill (1730- circa 1782) published in their Pattern Book No. 1 (page 171, figure t) and reproduced in Sir Nicholas Goodison's Ormolu: The Work of Matthew Boulton (New York, 1974, page 383, figure 161). Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795) was a close friend of Boulton's and his patterns are thought to be the source for the medallions used on the plinths of these. Boulton's medallions of classical figures are almost identical to the cameos and intaglios made by Wedgwood and his partner James Tassie. Molds for these examples can be found in the Wedgwood Collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. All derive from the same classical source of Renaissance gems. Many gem collections in Europe were widely published at this time and Boulton's library contained A. F. Gori's Museum Florentinum (1731-1766), in which gems from the Medici collection were engraved. The subjects of the medallions on this pair are: Pomona, a Roman goddess of fruit trees, gardens, and orchards, and depicted carrying a basket on her head overloaded with fruit, tumbling to the ground, shown once on each vase. Hygeia, once on each, with an olive branch in her right hand, as seen in Tassie's reproduction of Valerio Belli's gem, and holding a snake in her left hand over an altar. This was produced by Wedgwood both as an intaglio and as a cameo. Venus & Cupid, only on one vase, showing Venus leaning against a column with a pike, and giving a helmet to Cupid. Aesclepius, Greek GD of medicine, only on one vase, depicted with a snake wrapped around his staff .The last medallion subject is either Diomedes or Perseus, shown once on each vase, depicted as a conquering hero. Boulton asked patrons to choose from a limited repertoire of motifs, and therefore each vase or pair of vases is adorned with their own combination. Boulton used nine medallion subjects on recorded vases of this type. PROVENANCE & COMPS Another pair of this model, with slightly less elaborate lids and finials, from a private collection are illustrated in Goodison's Matthew Boulton: ORMOLU, (page 379, figure 153). A further example is in a private New York collection. This pair, which was acquired from Hotspur in 1981, was formerly in the Collection of Marjorie Wiggin Prescott, sold Christie’s, New York, 31 January 1981, lot 76. The Prescott Collection was one of the most important English furniture collections of its time. The sale consisted mostly of late 17th and 18th century English furniture...
