A wonderfully whimsical and highly decorative pair of antique German porcelain figural candelabra, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century and executed in the elaborate Dresden tradition. Each candelabrum is modelled with a seated court jester in colourful theatrical costume, amusingly depicted playing an animal as a musical instrument—one with a cat and the other with a pig. The figures are surrounded by exuberant flowering branches rising to twin candle sconces, creating an imaginative combination of sculpture, humour and functional decorative porcelain. The porcelain is richly hand-painted in a vibrant palette of turquoise, pink, blue, green, yellow and gilt highlights. Particularly attractive details include the jesters' elaborate multicoloured caps, striped costumes, individually applied flowers and scrolling Rococo-style bases. The floral-encrusted branches and petal-form candle supports are characteristic of the highly ornamental porcelain associated with Dresden and other important German ceramic centres.
