Akin to the prevailing taste of the Napoleonic era that envisaged a return to antiquity, the Empire Style was used for the decoration of furniture, architectural structures, furnishings, wall hangings and fabrics. The style envisaged a classical return to order, embellished by the antiquarian whimsy inspired by the recent archaeological discoveries at Herculaneum and Pompeii: the constant Roman and Hellenistic remembrance was celebrated through applications depicting laurel or oak garlands, imperial symbolism, mythological figures, sphinxes, muses, personifications and more.
This watch organises the mechanical case on a parallelepiped supporting structure, subdivided into two parts connected by a sinuous greek decoration with flowers; the whole structure rests on the plane by means of convex feet decorated with a dense network of small flowers inscribed within a modular rhombus, culminating, in the attachment to the central body of the watch, with a theory of palmettes. The upper part of the parallelepiped body, inscribed with mythological figuration like the ancient stelae, encloses the latter with a frame of stylised palm leaves interspersed with discs of flowers, in turn accompanied, on the two vertical sides, by a lively vegetal triumph. Considering the iconographic range used by the bronzeworkers for the decoration of the clocks, it is possible to recognise in the mythological scene depicted the muse of poetry and music, Calliope, accompanied by the attributes of the lyre and the laurel branch, used to pay homage to poets. The two winged geniuses in front of her carry scrolls and plates on which to engrave the verses the muse dictates daily to men; the reward for human intellect is emphasised by the two similar crowns the muse holds in her hands, depicting a serpent biting its tail. This symbol, which the mediaeval era would borrow from the Hellenistic-Roman environment of Gnosticism by creating the figure of the uroboros, metaphorically manifests the purpose of the clock, being used to personify the eternal return of time and the cyclical nature of the material life of men.
The case of the watch is enclosed in a zither, which is flanked by a woman crowned with laurel; the upper part has two griffin heads in correspondence with the arms of the zither, and a second female face crowned with a ring of petals/rays, again alluding to the sublime elevation of poetry. On the right side of the instrument rests a lighted torch accompanied by an extinguished upside-down torch, an allusion to present well-being, victorious over the failings of life, to which the bust of a philosopher in a disc also alludes. A large and impressive French Empire period gilt bronze mantel clock of exceptional quality and colour.

The finely chased and original gilt bronze case depicting Orpheus playing his lyre with an eight-day bell striking movement, outside countwheel, backplate initialled and numbered 'A C D 1516’.
The dial with Roman numerals and inscribed Riccardo Pacinoti of Lavourne. It is a French movement (silk suspension) striking the hour and half hour. The case in the form of an oblong pillar cast with anthemium and cornucopia beneath a draped urn and a laurel wreath, flanked by the figure of Orpheus playing his lyre, the stepped plinth cast with wonderfully detailed underworld scenes, on leaf scroll feet.
In excellent condition the clock case has been cleaned with the movement completely overhauled and serviced to the highest standard by a specialist restorer.

These clocks vary massively in price, once recently sold for over £150,000 on 1stdibs, which was fully restored and look brand new. They have two mechanical winding features, one operates the clock and the other turns the wheels, I have wound the clock and it works as does the turning mechanism however both will need serving as they have sat for a very long time unused, I can have this done with a very fine clock restorer should the new owner wish

Constructed from gilt, hand-chased, and burnished bronze with patinated detail, the mantle clock on an asymmetric Rococo scrolling base with naturalistic features; the main body modelled as an elephant astride, mounted with a turbaned figure of a mahout (elephant keeper) in charge and his companion monkey, the elephant's back supporting a bamboo houdah enclosing the white enamelled dial marking the hours and minutes in Roman and Arabic numerals respectively, a tasselled cushion perched atop with two oriental figures holding parasols.

Clocks incorporating animals reigned supreme during the Louis XV period, at a time when curiosity for new cultures was at its height. The exoticism found expression in the accounts of explorers describing rhinoceros, lions and elephants, which were enthusiastically absorbed into European decorative arts.
The elephant acquired a particular aura following the diplomatic gift of the King of Siam to King Louis XIV of an elephant in 1686. Portico clock signed “Persevalle à Reims”
This refined portico clock crafted in transitional Louis XVI – Empire style from ormolu and black marble is signed on the dial “Persevalle à Reims”. The Empire style was based on elements of the Roman Empire and its culture, which had been rediscovered starting in the eighteenth century. Bronze was the main material used in Empire style timepieces and both the patina and ormolu techniques were vastly used for ornamentation during this period. As for the source of inspiration for decorative motifs of Louis XVI style, it was coming from nature and antiquity thus many characteristic elements would reoccur in architecture, interior decoration and furniture. Many ornaments were borrowed from flora, and this love for nature appeared into decoration by the presence of a wreath of roses, baskets, palmettes, bows and ribbons.
The portico clock is mainly crafted from black marble and ormolu bronze embellishments, which with their minimalistic touch compliments one another. As mentioned before, the source of inspiration for this portico clock derived from antiquity. The columns which are a key feature of portico clocks are constructed in Greco-Roman architecture. The two front black pillars are made in Tuscan style with gilded capital and base, they are also entwined with an acanthus spiral around the pillar. The back columns, in contrast to the front one, are square and has only a face adorned with a gilded bronze floral garland. The four columns are connected on top with an entablature with a cylinder-shaped dial in the middle cast from bronze. The entablature is adorned on both sides with gilded lyres and flower vases.
The dial of the clock is signed ‘Persevalle à Reims’ and consists of blue Breguet-style hands that indicate hours laid out in Roman numerals and minutes in Arabic numerals on the enamel dial. The Breguet hands have a circle with a filled crescent shape on the side and have been featured its founder's watch hands for over two centuries now. This unique shape is sometimes referred to by the French word for apple, pomme.
