Over time, these cavities fill with layers of silica-rich water. As the water slowly evaporates, it leaves behind a layer of silica gel, which eventually hardens into a solid layer. This process repeats, with each layer potentially containing different impurities that contribute to the variation in color we see in the agate's bands.
