Heroes of the Song of the Nibelungs, Cast Iron Statues, probably German

Heroes of the Song of the Nibelungs, Cast Iron Statues, probably German

Located in Greding, DE

Two almost life-size cast iron statues with great depth of detail and bronze-colored patina. Dimensions left: 153 x 60 x 40 cm Dimensions right: 154 x 50 x 40 cm The statues most likely depict central heroes of the Nibelung saga. The statue on the left is depicted with a bear on its helmet, which means it is probably Dietrich von Bern. This suggests that the hero on the right is Hagen, whose helmet is crowned with a swan. In the Song of the Nibelungs, Dietrich of Bern battles Hagen of Tronje and Volker of Alzey and defeats them both. Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld's (1794-1872) interpretations of the Song of the Nibelungs in the frescoes of the Munich Residence combine the two characters from the literary source with this variant depiction as German knights...

Kuba Iron Currency Spear, c. 1900

Located in Chicago, IL

While shield and spear were central to African combat, this iron example was most likely made to serve as a piece of trade currency. Many pre-colonization African currencies were modeled after objects of inherent value, resulting in sculptural combinations of function and beauty. This large iron spear dates to the early 20th century and is attributed to the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Secured to a narrow iron handle, the flattened blade has an elegant, sloping silhouette, subtly textured with concentric grooves and a rusted, antique patina. Forged as a broadleaf spear, the weapon contrasts a violent potential with images of peaceful branches swaying in the wind. We've set this unusual Kuba spear...

Antique Cast Iron Gothic Revival Three-Light Chandelier

Antique Cast Iron Gothic Revival Three-Light Chandelier

Located in Dekalb, IL

Ornate cast iron chandelier featuring a three-arm configuration with elaborate Gothic Revival detailing throughout. The fixture is built around a central column with layered scrollwork, branching into three arms that terminate in pierced basket-form bobeches. Each arm is reinforced with intricate foliate and scroll motifs, giving the piece a dense, architectural presence. The openwork cups retain their original drip pans, and the entire surface carries a dry, oxidized finish that emphasizes the casting texture and age. Suspended from a simple rod, the fixture reads as both decorative and structural-more akin to architectural ironwork than typical residential lighting. Unmarked example typical of early 20th century American foundry work, when cast iron lighting...
