Magnificent and large ormolu and hardstone mounted ebonized wooden casket English, 19th Century Height 41cm, width 72cm, depth 52cm Exceptionally fine and richly adorned, this beautiful piece is a large, ebonized wooden casket or coffer, mounted with extensive ormolu decorations, and inlaid on front and back with Florentine pietra dura hardstone panels. It was made in English in the early 19th century during the regency period, using a host of stylistic influences, and amalgamating various outstanding decorative techniques. The front and reverse are set with hardstone panels, depicting flowers, fruits and insects in the corners. This very large and substantial antique wine bottle's exact origins are unknown, but it is presumed to be English or possibly Dutch and dating from the early 1700's. The bottle was hand blown and formed and uses a very thick deep olive green glass. The slightly bent neck has a very thick stem and top which leads to a large bulbous or flask shaped base. The front and back sides have been slightly flattened which was likely done for packing and stability during shipping. An interesting mid-19th century ecclesiastical 6-inch encaustic clay tile by Minton & Co. (stamped). Dating to circa 1850, this antique encaustic tile is an excellent example of 19th century Minton works. It has moderate surface wear, and the reverse is in very clean condition clearly bearing the Minton name and marked ‘29’. The design itself is of ecclesiastical theme, displaying a Christogram (also known as a Chi-Rho or Chrismon symbol). This is one of the earliest symbols of the Christian faith, used as far back as 4th century Ancient Rome by Emperor Constantine the Great who used the mark on shields as part of military symbolism. The symbol is a monogram of the Greek letters ‘Chi (X)’ and ‘Rho (P)’ which together form the first two letters of ‘Christ’ in Greek.
