Silver Cased Military Interest Presentation Snuff Box 1847

An exceptional and rare antique silver snuffbox reading 'PRESENTED TO St. Mr. P CAMPION, 1st Bn 19th Foot, by His, BROTHER SERJEANTS, As A Mark of Their, Sincere Regard.' in its original shaped fitted case and made by Cronin & Wheeler, Birmingham in 1847. The snuff box, probably unused, is simply stunning the cartouche shaped body engraved with rococo 'C' scrolls, engine turning and floral sprays with a hinged cover and richly gilded interior. The box has clear and crisp silver assay and makers marks to the cover and base and has date marks for 1847.
Provenance: The property of a gentleman.
Sergeant Major Patrick Campion was enlisted with the 19th Foot in 1838 and served in Malta, the Ionian Islands, the West Indies, Canada, the Crimea and India amongst other postings. He received a DCM at the Battle of Alma ‘for his gallant rescue, in company with a couple of his comrades, of a wounded officer of his own company, who was lying in front of the Russian line’s.’ and despite being injured in this act, he recovered and would see action at Inkerman, Redan and the siege of Sevastopol.

A male portrait bust in the Roman manner by Lawrence MacDonald (1799-1878) Carved in Carrara marble, rising from a round socle supporting a waisted column, the bust having resemblances to Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington as a young man. Dated 1847 Dimensions: H: 26 in / 65 cm W: 19.5 in / 49 cm D: 10 in / 26 cm Lawrence MacDonald (1799-1878) Macdonald worked as an ornamental sculptor for the architect James Gillespie Graham before entering the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh, in 1822. In Rome, in 1823 he was one of the founders of the British Academy of Art. He returned to Edinburgh in 1826 and became a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1829. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver vinaigrette has a rectangular shaped form.
The upper plateau of the cover is ornamented with a rare scene depicting Westminster Abbey in relief, all on a matte background.
The sides of the box and cover are encompassed with a continuous band of engraved leaf ornamentation.
The underside of this English silver vinaigrette is ornamented with engine turned ornamentation accented with engraved scrolling leaf decoration, incorporating a central vacant cartouche.
Both the base and cover are embellished with cast and applied leaf decorated borders to the rims.
The hinged silver vinaigrette cover allows access to the original hallmarked hinged, pierced floral and leaf decorated silver gilt grille and original gilded interior.
This exceptional box is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

This antique opalesque glass scent bottle is fitted with a fine and impressive yellow gold cylindrical collar and domed hinged cover, which opens to reveal the original push fit glass stopper.
The rim of the collar, cover and mounted foot are embellished with impressive leaf designs.
The surface of the cover is ornamented with impressive scrolling leaf decoration on a matte background, incorporating quatrefoil shaped floral motifs comprised of four collet set green-coloured hardstones.
