This fine mantel clock is cast entirely in ormolu by celebrated Parisian clockmaker Leroy and commemorates the return of Napoleon's ashes to France in 1840. The clock is set on a rectangular, tiered base with four decorative feet. The lower tier is centred with a sleeping lion above a plaque showing the scarf, sword and hat of Napoleon. There is a relief plaque above the lion showing a ship off St Helena (the location of Napoleon's exile) and to either side further decorations formed as martial trophies. To the top of the plaque is a portrait medallion of Napoleon with winged cherubs and the letter 'N'. The circular dial of the clock, signed 'Leroy a Paris', is set to the centre above the base within an ormolu border and flanked by the figures of France and an eagle to either side. Between them they hold an urn, which bears the inscription 'Ste Helene / 5 Mai 1821'. The figure of France holds a flag inscribed 'France 1840.' An exceptional, fine and impressive 18 carat yellow gold, 0.43 carat garnet, 0.08 carat ruby, green coloured hardstone and glass scent bottle; an addition to our diverse ornamental collection This exceptional 18 carat yellow gold antique scent bottle has a has a plain flask shaped form. This antique opalesque glass scent bottle is fitted with a fine and impressive yellow gold cylindrical collar and domed hinged cover, which opens to reveal the original push fit glass stopper. The rim of the collar, cover and mounted foot are embellished with impressive leaf designs. The surface of the cover is ornamented with impressive scrolling leaf decoration on a matte background, incorporating quatrefoil shaped floral motifs comprised of four collet set green-coloured hardstones. Each quatrefoil shaped design is embellished with a collet set cabochon cut ruby to the centre, totalling 0.08ct. The domed upper portion of the cover is further ornamented with an impressive scrolling leaf bordered floral design, comprised of five collet set green hardstone petals with an impressive 0.43ct round faceted cut garnet to the centre, collet set in relief. Born in Palermo to French parents, Joseph-Michel-Ange Pollet studied sculpture in Italy with Bertel Thorwaldsen, Valerio Villareale and Pietro Tenerani. He came to Paris in 1836, then stayed in Ghent in 1838. After another stay in Italy from 1843 to 1845, he settled permanently in Paris and exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1846. He won a medal of third class in 1847, a second class medal in 1848 and a first class medal in 1851. In 1855 he was awarded a second class medal at the Universal Exhibition. An exceptional and rare antique silver snuffbox reading 'PRESENTED TO St. Mr. P CAMPION, 1st Bn 19th Foot, by His, BROTHER SERJEANTS, As A Mark of Their, Sincere Regard.' in its original shaped fitted case and made by Cronin & Wheeler, Birmingham in 1847. The snuff box, probably unused, is simply stunning the cartouche shaped body engraved with rococo 'C' scrolls, engine turning and floral sprays with a hinged cover and richly gilded interior. The box has clear and crisp silver assay and makers marks to the cover and base and has date marks for 1847. Weight 131gr Provenance: The property of a gentleman.
