A striking and very high quality French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and patinated bronze statue signed by Jules Moigniez. The statue is raised by an elegant mottled oblong ormolu base below the wonderfully executed patinated bronze ground design with rocks where the signature is displayed. Above is an impressive bird with open wings standing on a branch amidst richly chased leaves and berried designs with an intricately detailed snake standing in defense. Wonderful subject matter and exceptional attention throughout. Jules Moigniez was a renowned French sculptor. Born in 1835 in Senlis and died in Saint-Martin-du-Terte (Seine-et-Oise) in 1894. Pheasant and Weasel From our Sculpture collection, we are delighted to offer this French Bronze Pheasant by Jules Moigniez. The French Bronze of good scale cast with a large male Pheasant clambering upon a rocky outcrop startled by a Weasel hiding within the foliage. The Pheasant naturalistically cast with individual feathers visible, sharp claws and spurs above the foot. The Weasel sits hidden in the foliage visible from viewing the French Bronze from the side as it shocks the Pheasant. The French Bronze signed to the front left on a rock face J. Moigniez (Jules Moigniez). The bronze sculpture dates to the late 19th century belle époque period Circa 1870. Jules Moigniez (1835-1894) was born at Senlis, Oise, just north of Paris, France on the 28 May 1835 the son of a metal gilder. Moigniez studied under Paul Comoléra (1813-1890) a specialist Animalia sculptor. It is clear that Moigniez’s career in Animalia was passed down from his tutors specialism in Animalia and in particular birds. Moigniez father bought a foundry specifically to cast his son’s sculptures. This gave Moigniez a huge advantage compared to other artist as it greatly reduced his costs during manufacturing and increased productivity keeping the process in-house. A French 19th century pair of Ormolu andirons Designed with Two Sitting Dogs on a cushion and resting on a Louis XVI Style base After the famous model by Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755) Circa 1880 Jacques Caffie´ri (1678-1755), a sculptor famous for his works in bronze, was the son of Philippe Caffie´ri (1634-1716), who emigrated from Naples to Paris at the request of Cardinal Mazarin to decorate the interiors at Versailles. He was elected to the Academe de Sainte-Luc as a sculptor, and thus created many of the original designs that were proprietary models of his foundry. Jacques was received as a mai^tre fondeur-ciseleur by 1715, the date of his first known work, a design for a pall for the Corporation des Fondeurs-Ciseleurs, one of the two Parisian guilds that oversaw works cast in metal. Caffieri was appointed fondeur-ciseleur des Ba^timents du Roi in 1736. Following this a large proportion of his best work as a designer and chaser in bronze was executed for commissions to the crown at Versailles, Fontainebleau, Marly, Compie`gne, Choisy and the Cha^teau de La Muette. In fact he executed so much work for the crown that they were forever in his debt, still owing him money at his death. In addition to these royal commissions from his workshop in rue des Canettes came an amazing amount of work, chiefly in the shape of gilt bronze furniture mounts...
