Chinoiserie Sculptures

CHINOISERIE STYLE

Emerging in the 17th century, chinoiserie appropriated the aesthetics and imagery of popular East Asian design for European-made versions. Reflecting the exoticization of China, Japan and other countries in this era, the word directly translates from French to “Chinese-esque,” which reveals its shortcomings as a style of furniture and decor that often stereotypically and reductively mimics Asian culture rather than showcasing and paying tribute to its artistic traditions.

The enthusiastically decorative chinoiserie style was propelled by influential tastemakers including French King Louis XIV, whose Trianon de Porcelaine in 1670 was inspired by Chinese architecture. Expanded trade between the East and West led to a demand for porcelain, lacquer objects, silk and other goods, which further informed the fanciful furniture being crafted in Europe.

Artisans working in the chinoiserie style used materials and elements like pagoda shapes, bamboo, lacquer surfaces, bird and flower motifs and other interpretations of Asian design on pieces that were frequently set against vibrant wallcoverings. This whimsical approach yielded chinoiserie furniture that boasted dramatic flourishes drawing on the natural world and reflected the dominance of Rococo during the 18th century.

As chinoiserie was shaped by approximations of Asian design by European creators, it had regional variations, such as Chinese Chippendale in England where cabinets, chairs and tea tables had wooden fretwork designs and “japanned” surfaces intended to resemble lacquer work that was created in East Asia. In North America, furniture makers in Boston and New York integrated chinoiserie-painted scenes into Queen Anne furniture.

Antique chinoiserie furniture has continued to be fashionable, from its popularity with decorators of the Hollywood Regency era — James Mont, Tommi Parzinger, William Haines and Samuel Marx favored the style — to contemporary interior designers, although it brings with it a complex history.

Located in Auribeau sur Siagne, FR
Set of 4 Chinese Animal Figurines in Jade and Onyx – Elephants, Lion & Dog, 20th Century Description: This refined set of four animal figurines, crafted in China during the 20th century, showcases the elegance of natural stone carving and the timeless symbolism of animals in decorative art. The ensemble includes a pair of jade elephants, a reclining lion in jade, and a seated dog in onyx, each carved with delicate detail and smooth finishes. Perfect for display in a cabinet, on a console, or as part of a themed vignette, these figurines bring a sense of serenity, strength, and tradition to any interior. Key features include: Natural Stone Materials: The pair of elephants and the lion are carved from jade, known for its symbolic value and subtle translucence. The seated dog is carved from onyx, offering a contrasting tone and texture with its elegant veining and natural luster. Symbolic Animal Forms: Elephants symbolize wisdom, memory, and good fortune, especially when displayed as a pair. The lion conveys strength, protection, and calm authority. The dog represents loyalty, guardianship, and companionship. Chinese 20th-Century Craftsmanship: All four pieces reflect traditional Chinese stone-carving techniques, combining refined form with smooth, tactile surfaces. Versatile Decorative Use: Whether placed in a display case, on a desk, shelf, or altar, these figurines serve as both decorative accents and subtle symbols of balance and harmony. Curated Collector’s Set: The combination of two materials and four distinct animals makes this set ideal for collectors of Asian art, animal figures, or natural stone miniatures. Pair of Han Dynasty Pottery Horses and Equestrian Riders
Located in Dallas, TX
A wonderful pair of Ex Sotheby’s painted Polychrome Equestrian Horse and Riders made from gray pottery, Presents beautifully and guaranteed authentic with provenance and COA. Measures: Height 11.5 inches and width 11 inches Condition: Possible professional restorations but not detectable. Provenance: Sotheby’s London. 16th November, 1999. Lot 12 (2 of 4 horses in that lot). Sotheby’s New York, NY September 14, 2019. The importance of the horse in the history and culture of China can be viewed, in part, through the artistic legacy of this great civilization. In sculpture, painting, and literature, horses were glorified and revered. Horses were believed to be related to mythological dragons, reflecting their sacred status within society. During the unification of China under the Han Dynasty, bands of mounted nomadic warriors from the north threatened the country. In order to thwart their attacks, the Chinese sought to import stronger, faster steeds from Central Asia (as opposed to the Mongol ponies used by the invaders), eventually leading to the creation of the Silk Road. This small sculpture of a mounted soldier reveals the crucial military role of the horse. When compared to the diminutive stature of the rider, the importance of the horse becomes readily apparent. This creature provided security and strength, allowing the Empire to secure its borders and expand its influences across Central Asia. The magnificent regalia of the horse, including a brilliantly painted saddle in red and green/gold, reflect the respect this animal received. The warrior as well is gorgeously decorated with a painted red tunic and gray chest...
