Neoclassical Sculptures

NEOCLASSICAL STYLE

Neoclassical design emerged in Europe in the 1750s, as the Age of Enlightenment reached full flower. Neoclassical furniture took its cues from the styles of ancient Rome and Athens: symmetrical, ordered, dignified forms with such details as tapered and fluted chair and table legs, backrest finials and scrolled arms.

Over a period of some 20 years, first in France and later in Britain, neoclassical design — also known as Louis XVI, or Louis Seize — would supersede the lithe and curvaceous Rococo or Louis XV style.

The first half of the 18th century had seen a rebirth of interest in classical antiquity. The "Grand Tour" of Europe, codified as a part of the proper education of a patrician gentleman, included an extended visit to Rome. Some ventured further, to sketch the ruins of ancient Greece. These drawings and others — particularly those derived from the surprising and rich archaeological discoveries in the 1730s and ’40s at the sites of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum — caused great excitement among intellectuals and aesthetes alike.

Neoclassical furniture is meant to reflect both grace and power. The overall appearance of neoclassical chairs, tables and cabinetry is strong and rectilinear. These pieces are, in effect, classical architecture in miniature: chair and table legs are shaped like columns; cabinets are constructed with elements that mirror friezes and pediments.

Yet neoclassicism is enlivened by gilt and silver leaf, marquetry, and carved and applied ornamental motifs based on Greek and Roman sculpture: acanthus leaves, garlands, laurel wreaths, sheaves of arrow, medallions and chair splats are carved in the shapes of lyres and urns.

As you can see from the furniture on these pages, there is a bit of whimsy in such stately pieces — a touch of lightness that will always keep neoclassicism fresh.

19th Century Grand Tour Italian Bronze of the 'Callypygian Venus'
Located in London, GB
Beautiful Art Nouveau period classical bronze study of a partially draped woman, raising her light peplos (draped clothing) to uncover her hips and buttocks, and looking back and down over her shoulder, perhaps to evaluate them. This subject is conventionally identified as Venus (Aphrodite) – see desriptive narrative below for further details. The surface of the bronze sculpture has wonderful deep rich brown colour and intricate surface detail, inscribed with the Italian Naples foundry. A large impressive sculpture that is further enhanced with an ebonized circular wooden plinth. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Height: 92 cm Condition: Excellent Original Condition circa: 1900 Materials: Bronze Foundry: Michele Amodio Napoli SKU: 7753 ABOUT Callipygian Venus Callipygian Venus – Venus, thought to be more beautiful than any mortal woman, demurely admires her reflection in this sculpture called “Callipygian,” meaning “of the beautiful buttocks.” Although the late Hellenistic original once stood at the center of a POOL in Nero’s Domus Aurea in Rome, it was considered “dangerously erotic” and was included amongst other such artworks in a secret cabinet when relocated to Naples in 1802. History of the Callipygian The Venus Kallipygos as we have it is a Roman work in marble, dating to the late 1st century BC. It is considered to be a copy or “paraphrase” of an older Greek statue, probably bronze. This lost original is thought to have been created around 300 BC, near the inception of the Hellenistic era. The marble version’s sculptor and provenance are unknown. It was rediscovered, missing its head, in Rome by at least the 16th century. It is sometimes said to have been found in the ruins of Emperor Nero’s Domus Aurea, though this is unlikely, as fragments uncovered there contained no evidence of high-quality artworks such as the Venus. The missing head was reconstructed in the 16th century. The restorer decided to have the figure look over her shoulder at her own buttocks, a choice that gave the Venus its distinctive pose and had a significant effect on later interpretations of the work. The statue was acquired by the Farnese family and was in the Palazzo Farnese by 1594; it may be the draped Venus described as being in the palace by visitors earlier that century. In the 17th century it is known to have been kept in the palace’s Sala dei Filosophi, where it stood surrounded by statues of eighteen ancient philosophers. In 1731 the Farnese estate was inherited by Charles of Bourbon, who moved some of the marbles, including the Venus, across the Tiber River to the Villa Farnesina. In 1786 the Bourbons decided to move the Venus Kallipygos to Naples with the rest of the Farnese collection. First, however, it was sent to be restored by Carlo Albacini. Responding to contemporary criticisms of some of the statue’s features, Albacini replaced the head, the arms, and one leg; he followed the previous restoration fairly faithfully in having the figure look back over her shoulder. By 1792 the statue was at the Museum of Capodimonte in Naples, and by 1802 it was in the Museo degli Studi, now the Naples National Archaeological Museum, where it remains. 19th Century French Patinated Bronze Sculpture After Joseph Charles Marin
By Joseph Charles Marin
Located in Victoria, BC
Here is a lovely 19th century French patinated bronze sculpture after Joseph Charles MARIN. Joseph Charles Marin (1759-1834) was a French sculptor known for his Neoclassical style. Patinated bronze is a technique used to give bronze sculptures an aged or weathered look by applying a chemical solution to the surface of the metal. This process can enhance the detail and texture of the sculpture and add to its aesthetic appeal. This patinated bronze sculpture of a young woman or nymph was cast by the Raingo Fréres Foundry of Paris after a model attributed to Joseph-Charles Marin, a famous French sculptor. The lovely face of this young woman radiates joy and her wavy hair adds a touch of playfulness. The bust sits on a short marble column...
