Signed Georges Jouve & Mathieu Matégot "Patte d'Ours" Red Ceramic Ashtray 1951

By Mathieu Matégot, Georges Jouve

Located in Geneva, CH

Superb and rare "Patte d'Ours" or "Bear's Paw" cherry red enameled ceramic ashtray with black iron and rattan Stand, made by famous french ceramist Georges Jouve and french designer Mathieu Matégot, France 1951 Mint condition, ceramic signed by Jouve underneath. For his friend Mathieu Matégot, Georges Jouve made a handful of ceramics designed to go with the perforated metal furniture made by the decorator, emblematic of the spirit of freedom reigning over the 1950s in France. The perfect meeting of their respective inspiration becomes tangible here with the famous "Matégot" ashtray shaped like a bear's paw, made from 1951 onward in a range of monochrome enamels, sometimes crackled, matte or glossy. This model would be made in large numbers thanks to the casting technique. The association of the two freinds carried over into decoration projects. In 1954, Matégot and Jouve once again pooled their talents, in the project involving one of the very first organic restaurants in Paris, La Saladière, on Avenue des Ternes. For these premises Jouve made vertical, three-part partitions in black and white enamel, as well as ceramic table tops...
